Question DPF Delete Laws???

I started this in another thread. But I thought more of us should read this. I put this up in the link at the bottom

__________________________________________________ ____________________

Speaking of DPF Deletes and legalities, I got this from the state after an inquiry. I told them I was looking for the laws regulating the Diesel Pick ups and told them I was looking to buy one which had a modified exhaust.

This is what they said

__________________________________________________ _

The simplest way to explain this is that to be emissions compliant, the truck has to have all of the original emissions equipment intact and functional. Because USEPA allowed a phase-in of the required emission controls, I'm not sure if the 2007 has just a cat, with or without sensors, or the more involved system with a particulate filter, which includes a monitoring system. Your local Dodge dealer should be able to advise you on this.

Generally speaking, the exhaust system components behind the cat are not part of the certified configuration, and can be changed from the original, but again, consult with the dealer to see if a particular part is needed to address a safety issue. For example, many of the newer particulate filter systems are equipped with an exhaust pipe tip designed to reduce the exhaust gas temperature when the filter regenerates, burning off the accumulated soot. This process produces very high exhaust temperatures which can actually ignite flammable materials and easily cause burns to unsuspecting vehicle owners. So, please exercise all due caution.

The rules that specify the information you're looking for are actually in the federal regulations. The general reference is 40 CFR 86, meaning Title 40 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Part 86, which is very extensive, but still doesn't specify exactly what equipment your particular vehicle will have. Most likely your truck would be equipped with a computerized engine management system, PCV, EGR, evaporative controls, a catalytic converter (a main and/or 2 "mini" units), and attendant sensors (including oxygen). Again, your dealer wold be your most accurate source of information.

I hope this helps. Please contact me if you have any more questions

Am I reading this correctly that our truck only needs to have the EGR, and Cats in tact? No particulate filter? Only Ford and GMC has the tailpipes with the heat traps on them, so that part of the read wouldn't apply to us.

That's what it looks like to me too. There are pages and pages of goop on the Government site

1999 CFR Title 40, Volume 2

I don't have a month to read all this crap.

Does this mean when 2010 comes around the DPF's would have to be put back on?

No I don't think so

As an example, I have a 72 Dodge I drive every day. I don't have to put a cat in it because it's based on the year of the engine.

So since these are 2010 standards, I would think we would be OK.

I have to tell you though, I am not taking my cat out. But the rest is an easy conversion back if it's done.

Isn't the particle filter in front of the cat? Small cat in front, then particle filter then larger cat?

No. The particulate filter is behind the Cat and in front of the Muffler.

correct, if you're referring to the small cat in the downpipe

Very interesting. Maybe we can get rid of the DPF without risking a 15 to life jail term.
