'08 6.7 or stick with '06 5.9??

New to the forums and need some advice. I have an '06 QC SB 5.9 auto. I LOVE this truck! Its my first diesel and i'm never going back to gas again.

I haven't had many problems with it, but theres been a computer issue i've had to deal with lately. I have 29,600 miles on it and the warranty expires at 36,000. I've only had the truck 15 months and drive about 2000 miles a month. I'm worried about problems that occur after the warranty expires which will be within the next 3 months. I looked into buying an extended warranty and its around $2,000. But here's where i'm at a crossroad....

I got the truck during the employee pricing special and paid $39k OTD including tax, tags, fees. I put $8k down and financed the rest. I owe $25k now, and the dealership said they'd give me $33k for it on a trade. Not a bad deal i think. So essentially, I get back that $8k i put down and use it towards the down payment on the trade.

I started with a 72 month loan at 7.9% and have 57 pmnts left. If I give them my truck and my mustang (which they'll give me $8k for), I get a virtually identical truck, except 2 years newer, 0 miles, the 6.7 cummins, 6 spd auto, and lifetime warranty.

I can refinance the balance of my current loan for 60 months so i'll get 5.9% instead of 7.9%. Because of that 2% drop and adding my mustang as another down payment, my monthly payments will only go up about $8.00 a month plus 3 extra payments. Those 3 payments, plus an $8 increase per month totals approx $2,000 more out of pocket at the end of 60 months. The way I see it, thats what I was going to spend on the new warranty for my '06. So regardless of whether or not I get the new truck, i'm still dishing out that $2,000. However, the warranty the '08 will come with is lifetime instead of just 85,000 mi so i'm getting a lot more for my money.

So it turns out that for $8,000 (the mustang) i'll get a brand new truck with my monthly payment going up less then $10.

It seems like a good deal from a financial standpoint, but my main concern is whether or not the 6.7 cummins and 6 spd auto are worth going through all the hassle for. I know some people are having problems with the new engine, and others say the 5.9 is better even if the 6.7 didn't have the problems. I dont know what to think. As pointed out above, there is good reason to go with the new truck. But I don't want to make a mistake.

What would you do in my situation and why?

Lifetime warranty only applies to gas vehicles. I am very happy with my 6.7 auto. I have pulled bike trailers to the dunes and that exhaust brake comes in really handy when coming over the pass. Have you driven a 6.7 yet? i would go and check it out if you have not. All else if you cant decide what you want to do you could always have the dealer search for an 07 5.9. But at this point in the game it is going to be hard to find a manual. When i looked in july for a 5.9 6 speed i couldnt find one in oregon.

Each time Chrysler has upped the HP and torque the fuel mileage has went down. It takes fuel to make HP. With that said, I have owned seven 5.9's and now the 6.7. I wouldn't trade this truck for any of my previous trucks. The 6.7 has way more power and the 6 speed can't even compare to the old 48RE. The 08's have less problems then the 07.5's did. I haven't had a problem yet with mine.
Go for it, you won't be sorry.

they told me ill get the lifetime on everything but the engine, which comes with the standard cummins warranty. he might have been wrong, but he offered it to me. if they dont ill try to get theyre best extended warranty for free cause he did offer the lifetime as part of the deal

havent driven one yet but im going back on thurs for a test drive. does it get worse mpg because of the higher displacement? i only tow my car to and from the track twice a month at most. but its 7 miles to the nearest store from my house, so fuel economy is a major factor in making the decision

I'm sure the dealer can offer you that lifetime warranty. It just doesn't come standard on diesels.

I'm very happy with my 6.7. All the power I could ask for and zero problems.

i talked to a guy the other day that has the 6.7 and tows cars around the country with it. i think he said it had 80,000 miles on it and he swears it gets 20mpg. he said at first it got 12-13 then when it got to about 45-50,0000 miles it started getting alot better very quickly. i dont know if he was pulling my leg or not but would love to see it first hand

With the demand being almost at panic levels for the last of the good 'ole 5.9s, I would suggest putting your truck on ebay or listing it for sale, as you may get a bit more for it. The same applies to the mustang. You would probably be in a better financial position to negotiate a better deal. Also, shop around and work the deal a bit.
Having said all that, I personally recomend you purchas a 6.7 with the 68. great combo .

Thanks for the responses. i appreciate all of them. Looks like an '08 is in my future, as long as everything else falls into place.

I'm gonna look at ebay and see what the trucks are going for, but the mustang was already on there twice and i've had it for sale for a couple months without any luck. I never thought of putting the truck on there though. Good idea.

All I can say is get in writing , because the lifetime does not apply to diesel, SRT10 or vehicles for commercial use. The salesman was wrong, but let him document his claims about what he is offering for warranty. That way you have something to take back and negotiate with when he realizes he was mistaken.
