5.9 vs 6.7

I bought my 06 dodge with 5.9 because I was told that the new 6.7 would be comming out and would have more emissions control and would be down tunned as well as would not have as much ability to mod it - basically that the 5.9 was a better motor and to not miss out... Wondering what you guys think???

Will the 6.7 be better when the aftermarket has a chance to catch up???

I bought one of the last 5.9L, and I love it. I am glad I didnt get the 6.7L, because there are so many people having problems with them right now. I think it will be a great motor once they get all of the bugs worked out. Maybe in another year or so, that will probably be the motor to have. For now though, I think the 5.9L is the safe bet on a reliable truck with plenty of mods available for it. Just my .02cents

The 6.7 is NOT downtuned, its much faster than the 5.9. My 05 ran a 15.16 @ 89.06 with an Edge, CAI and straight pipe. My 08 ran 15.21 @ 88.79 with nothing but a CAI on it.

Do you know the reason for uping the displacement? I was told by a Dodge salesman as well as other dodge owners that the 6.7 would have more emissions controlling and the motor would be downtuned which made the 5.9 more desireable... which made me think that removing some of that emissions stuff (on the 6.7) and starting out with a motor that was down tuned would mean that it would have more potential in the long run. Just my thoughts at the time... I know I didn't put much stock in what the salesmen said...lol. Sounds like it moves just fine in stock form anyways.

Do you know the HP and TQ specs vs the 5.9 and the new twin turbo powerstroke?

I do wish I had one more gear with my 48RE, but I'm happy with my 5.9. I imagine by this time next year, the 6.7 will have the bugs worked out, and it will be an amazing motor as well, not that it isn't, just that there seems to be problems with some of the motors.

They increased to 6.7 so the engine would operate under less load to better meet emissions. On a 6.7 you get some great stuff... Exhaust recirculated through your intake system. Exhaust = Heat. So much for cool clean air entering your engine. Wait!... Now you get a cooler for your EGR... WooHooo! sorry! but a cooler = more garbage under hood... and theres more! The good ole DPF along with a regeneration cycle. = more garbage. Dont forget to use your low ash oil! Oop's... you didnt stick some 2 cycle oil in your tank did you? The new ULSD is junk without additives. Im sticking with the 5.9.

Note: 6.7's are a good engine, IMHO still better than Ford and Chevy. I'd just rather start with a 5.9 and build trouble free HP from there

The 6.7s will be better when they get the bugs out of them. Which i hear they are doing. The 08's, havent heard much problems from them. YET...... We will see.

Cubes are cubes. Bigger cubic inch displacement means more horse and more torque. This has been around almost as long as the bible-

Unless more displacement means a greater torque to horsepower ratio, in conjuction with a lower redline and more engine spool-up difficulty.

Those little turbo 4 guys with no torque and 10,000 RPM got it figured out, if you ask me...
