I heard the 6.7 is pretty detuned and capable of much more power than the 5.9. I'm not sure the facts back up losing power because of the emissions. Detuned yes but I don't think there is a flow restriction.
Without the regen running I get close to what my 5.9 got. I think it's important to compare the same driver as we all drive different. When my wife drove my 5.9 she got about 13 to 15 and I would get 18 to 22. Same truck, different drivers. Your friend may be driving like me and you could be driving like my wife.

I have not had any issues with my 6.7 and I just love it. I love the 6 speed auto and the exhaust break.

THATS WHY I DONT BUY ANYTHING NEW FOR THE FIRST COUPLE OF YEARS THAT ITS "new". GIVE THE FACTORY TIME TO WORK OUT THE BUGS, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, GIVE THE MFG'S THAT ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR AFTERMARKET PRODUCTS TO GET UP TO SPEED ON THINGS SO THAT WHEN YOU DO FINALLY GET IT, YOU CAN ACT LIKE YOUR TEN YEARS OLD AGAIN, THUMBING THROUGH THE TOYS R US WISH BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!EXCEPT NOW, THE TOYS ARE A LOT MORE EXPENSIVE

I had an 06 5.9 auto, now have a 6.7 stick C&C, My 6.7 has been a great motor so far (53k on the odo). I would have went with a 5.9 again solely because of the mileage I put on a truck, and the parts availability on a 5.9 versus a 6.7. It depends what you are going to do with the truck, no doubt Cummins will get all of the bugs worked out soon and that more maintenance parts will be readily available for the 6.7 but this takes time. I had to wait 7 days to get a fuel filter from the dealer for my 6.7. If it were my 5.9 any parts store in the country would have it on the shelf. The 6.7 pulls better hands down stock, no turbo lag. The 5.9 is a tried and true motor period! In stock form it will not pull as well as the 6.7 but there is something to be said about a proven engine when your in the mountains 2k away from your delivery site or home.If your a 6.7 owner and read the posts in this forum it is scary to see so many people having issues with these new engines (emissions actually). I always have that thought in the back of my mind, even though my truck has never left me stranded.

yeah I know what you mean about different drivers, and I've tried it. My best milage was 16.5 and it was babied on the highway. Doesn't seem to matter how you drive it.

My AU flash did drop my milage a bit though. I used to get closer to 17.5 (overheard) and now it's closer to 15.8 (overhead). Hand calc dropped a bit too.

My truck has a build date of 5-16-07. What flash do I have? How many newer flashers are there ? What do these newer flashes improve? How come I have had no problems without them? I work for a Caterpillar dealership in field service and have some knowledge of workings.

Any suggestions on where to look? Any dealers or sites that specilize in used Diesels? I already look on ebay, and it's been slim pickings lately.

Unfortunantly I do qualify for a supplier discount, which is why I'm entertaining the idea of another new one.
I'd check with Dave Smith Motors in Idaho. Very large dealership, huge inventory with internet sales. They will also do a search for a refundable deposit.

as far as power goes i have pulled a 36,000 pound load with my truck and i got about 9 mpg doing it the 5.9l is strong dependable and long lasting, but you've heard the saying change is never good at the the start. those 6.7s will come around just give them time. as for now i would advize you to get a 5.9 i mean problems are going to happen but that many at 11,000 miles is pathetic

I drove my friend's 5.9L yesterday (same as mine, just not the 6.7) and it was definitely different.

Shifting his G56 seemed MUCH more solid than mine. Definitely a lot tighter, like there was less play, especially with the clutch.

Starts in 2nd seemed much more firm as well. Like if you dump the clutch it'd actually go...almost like it had better lower end response.

Power wise, I couldn't tell a difference. I did miss the EB though!!
