Trying to decide what to do about my 6.7L..... Need your help/advice

I'm a relatively new dodge/cummins convert. I've got a 6.7L laramie 4x4 manual 2500. Love the truck, EXCEPT for all the emissions/turbo issues. Already had the turbo replaced, but still end up back at the dealer weekly or bi weekly to have the engine light reset. However, it does get GREAT fuel mileage--anywhere from 19-21 mpg on the highway at 75 mph.

Nonetheless... I'm thinking about selling my 6/7L and going with a "new old stock" early '07 5.9L 6-speed manual. What kind of mpg should I expect to see with the late 5.9L? same v. better v. worse?

Any body have any strong feelings (and why) one way or the other about going back to a 5.9L?

Thanks!

I am right with you...I have a new 6.7 and have had it in the shop 4 times and I have less than 4,000 miles on it. If you can get a 5.9, I would do it...that is my next step.

I have an 06 6 spd with 4.10 gears and I am getting around 16-17 mpg running 70 mph. But then again, mines also a 3500 so I have a little more weight to move.

Hope that helps answer your question about the mileage.

John

Document,document.document. If your truck is in the shop for the same problem and the dealer cannot fix it, you have recourse under the lemon laws. Check your state for the exact information on it. Mine has been flawless except for a radio issue.

Be sure the mechanics at your dealership know what the he!! they're doing!!!! These new 6.7L engines have been out for how long now, and I know for a fact that my dealer only just last month sent their mechanic to school on these engines!! I had a check engine light about a month ago and they didn't know what to do, so I had to drive it 180mi to the dealer I bought it from, and it took about 5hrs before they figured out it needed the most current download. But when it wouldn't take, that's when they finally discovered it didn't have the first flash that was supposed to be done before they sold it to me. Apparently, if it doesn't have the original flash done, any updated flashes that get put out won't download into the computer. It wasn't any big deal, it's just that they are way behind on training these guys to work on these new trucks!!! Other than that, though, I have not had any problems with my truck and I've put 19,000mi on it since June.

The "AU" flash will fix most of these problems. Just make sure you are in or near the bay when they do it. When they hook up the Starscan, they are looking for part #55350235AU on a 2500.

I agree. I was going to go with the 6.7, but knew the 5.9 was probably the best motor. I have been very happy with my truck, and havent had any problems. I am getting about 16mpg with mosty highway driving. I am hoping to go from 3.73 gears to 4.10's, because of the lift and 37's. This should help my mileage get back to around 18mpg. Just depends on if you wanna wait till the problems get sorted out, or go with the 5.9 where most of the problems were sorted out years ago.
