Oil Change Required after 500 miles
My 2007 2500 with a 6.7 liter engine just had the oil change required light come on. I have only 2000 miles on the truck and changed to Delo 15W-40 after 1500 miles (as recommended by my mechanic). I am going to take to the dealer but concerned this happened. Anyone have any ideas as to why? Thanks |

Not sure how the 07 trucks work, but most oil change monitoring systems base their indication on duration of use and oil conductivity. Conductivity measures contamination basically. Either your oil is getting prematurely contaminated, or your sensor is baked. I'd like to see an oil analysis of your engine's oil to see what is really going on in there. -Chuck

did you reset the oil change light? when the oil was changed? turn key on do not start. press the gas pedal to the floor 3 times w/ in 10 sec. that will reset the oil change interval! just a thought!

At the dealer now. Bottom line is hey are upgrading the flash (computer) with an update from Dodge and changing the oil/filter. I then have to drive for at least 45 minutes without stopping after the update. Thanks to everyone for the information. Can't say the process of getting someone to do this was easy. For those that want to hear the rest I will tell you the first dealer/service advisor was unwilling to do anything more than reset the indicator and told me to come back if it came on again. He tried to find the setting to change the indicator to see what mileage it was set for. He couldn't find it. Not being satisfied with that answer he gave me Dodge customer service. They were less help than the dealer and told me to go back to the dealer. Called the dealer I bought it at (far away) and they talked with a tech that just got back from training for the 6.7. He was the one that said bring it in NOW and they will update and change oil (as a safety precaution). Said the sensor is not based on any mileage and would go off based on type of driving and the actual analysis of the oil viscosity. Glad I kept asking as he mentioned scoring of the piston if you keep driving once this indicator lights. Better safe than sorry. Joe |

I'd take the conductivity measure over viscosity everytime... If it really works, will tell you small changes to the TBN / TAN alond with any dillution that occurs. I didn't run across anything in my owners manual on this, do you know of any information on this sensor?

Oil is a nonconductive matrix. As contamination, electrical conductivity will increase. I'm not sure what sensor the new trucks have, but I did find this link that should give you an idea of the capabilities of such systems. It appears that the sensor IS able to make assumptions about viscosity based on conductivity data. I'm betting that they know how conductivity changes with diesel fuel contamination, which would definately influence the viscosity of the oil. Delphi Diesel Engine Oil Condition Sensor -Chuck

Thanks... If the new Cummins has something like this and there is some way to check calibration if the unit as time goes by, then we will all have a new weapon in our efforts to combat engine wear.

My dealer was happy to order the truck I wanted to get my money but for the rest.... Because of all of you guys, I know more about my truck than all the Dodge's mechanics and technicians in Sudbury, On. For the oil change light or notification, the answer I got is if the light comes on too soon, just reset it and keep on driving and follow the oil change interval describe in the owner's manual. They didn't even know that CJ4 oil was required in the 6.7. Good thing I don't have any nightmares with the truck yet.
