Oil change

So far the longest oilchange interval I have had has been less then 5000km. I have made the dealer check it every time and I just get that everything is good and up to date and it is best that I change the oil when required. At 120.00 every 4-5000km that is exspensive maintenance when 12000km intervals are advertised.I don't idle my truck and I always run the engine brake. I do drive in town but when I almost got 5000km it was ALL highway. Deletes are not a option after my 5.9 cummins ordeal I am leaving my warranty intact. The truck is supposedly up on latest flash and they cleaned egr at last oil change but 4300km later it wants another oilchange.

As long as the egr is still intact you will have shorter oil change intervals.

Oil change intervals are determined by usage. If the truck is not working, it will require more oil changes. The longest oil change interval I have had was when I was towing my 5th wheel.

I just hit 9500km and the overhead jus dinged at me to change the oil.
Does the computer know, and take into account, if the EGR is unplugged? I doubt it.
So maybe your oil would still be ok past when the computer thinks you should change your oil?
I agree that 4000-5000km is way too soon. But if you change your oil yourself, it saves quite a bit. That is what I am doing.

Flying-J had 5L of Valvoline Premium blue for $20 - so ~$60 for oil, ~$15 for a filter from Cummins - a little cheaper than $120.

Scott.

My last oil change cost me $50 US, this I did myself and I even grease my drive shaft. My last dealer oil change was $131 US and the tec did not grease any of the required areas that required grease. I know I checked.
This is what convinced me to start changing my own oil again.

I pay no attention to the oil change warning on my truck. There is no rhyme no reason to when it goes off. As far as I'm concerned it is a toy just like the fuel usage meter.I cancel it as soon as it shows.
I change my oil and filter every 10,000 kms. Some time this winter I am going to install a bypass filter which will extend the change interval to 20,000 kms.
