i had a service manager at a dealership tell me i should run the EB all the time to help keep soot out of the turbo. is there any truth to this or is it just b.s.

There are alot of people on here who advocate running them all of the time. I'd say I have mine on about half the time, always when I'm towing. The sliding collar has a scraper to keep the soot off, and the more it moves the cleaner it will be.

I run both e-brakes on both of my trucks, (6.7 and 5.9) all the time, i've heard it helps blow out all the soot. The one on my 5.9 has had an e-brake for about 200,000 miles and not even one single hick-up.

I never run without mine. Doesn't completely solve the soot problems but helps for sure.

It's all a bunch of BS in my opinion
almost 19k with 0 issues here and i only run my e brake when I am towing
the actuator cycles itself after running for a few minutes to help clear out the soot
it's a cop out the dealers tell people to do. I often idle my truck for over an hour with the AC on stuck in DC traffic just my .02

Cant see how it would hurt...but I dont think it will solve all your problems either! I have heard of them getting stuck if you never use them, but give it a go once a week and you should be fine!

Sometimes I feel like the EB is kind of hard on the transmission/torque converter. A lot of times it locks up the torque converter on slowing down then unlocks it right away

I use mine all the time just because I like the sound of it. I'll sometimes downshift when slowing down just to hear it longer. Maybe I should have been a trucker.

brake pads are cheaper than drivetrain parts, but I try to use it at least once every time I drive it. I leave it off when driving around town, usually turn it on on a big downhill or on the freeway (when it's moving).
Keep in mind there are two different kind of drivers in here, ones that drive the truck all the time and get used to little tricks like controlling the EB with the throttle, and ones that don't. I am one of the others, the ones that drive other vehicles and have not trained myself to leave the right foot on the throttle a bit when coasting or you want just a little EB. With practice, you could eliminate most of the hard downshifts, but that's tough to do if you drive a gas vehicle with a touchy pedal most of the time.
