Engine Breakin How Many Miles?

Have a 07.5 with only 17K on her, I have noticed the the truck is starting to sound different (out the exhaust) and the engine is really starting to respond. My question is, how many miles does it usually take for these 6.7's to settle in? Thanks

i read in a magazine once 10-20 for a gas motor and 30-40 for a diesel motor. Just make sure that you are pulling stuff with your truck from time to time... from what i have heard it makes the motor break in better which leads to a longer lasting motor

i gave it the 3rd oil change at 12k then i used amsoil. around town and rural backroads jumped 50 miles a tank. same time as the weather broke springtime. now with 20k it's getting colder lets see if it continues.

Drive it like you stole right off the lot and never look back. Every new Caterpillar machine I put together receives no such "break in" and we have no problems....and Cat doesn't even require such nonsence.

Ive built plenty of race engines, and the only break-in was for a solid lift cam. If we used a roller, you can race it right outta the box. Only important thing is to make sure everything is up to operating temp, but once she's warmed up, put your foot in it.

You'll know it's broken in when you hear cheering and confetti comes out of your tailpipe, probably around 20K or so...SC

That is classic. I am keeping this quote if you do not mind:-)

One of the reasons I bought a diesel rig is I heard they like to be abused right form the start until they die 500K later. My truck almost has 3000 on it and it is already sounding different, and it has always been quick. SO I am either putting it in the grave early or there is some truth to driving it hard. I am doing AMSOIL and a bypass for my first oil change. Why wait for parts to wear.

If it's bone stock drive it like a sports car... It will keep the EGR/DPF clean.

My DPF and EGR fell off at around 12k miles... I now have about 35k on it, and started noticing better mileages and a slightly different sound around 25k or so...

Now I tow regularily with it as well..

Have not had a single problem other than a loose bolt on the EGR cooler which I thought was a failing turbo as it sounded awful.
