Ditto on replacing batteries in pairs. I've heard the above story play out many times with only one battery changed.
Connections can produce similar behavior, but if they are cleaned and tightened properly while changing both batteries, chances are it will put this type of issue to rest.

haha yeah kenworth I'd say so, One more thing, this is kind of off subject but a buddy of mine told me that on a duramax that you can only jump off of one certain battery, (the left or right I'm not sure), but he said that if you jump off of the wrong battery it can harm your ecm and other stuff. Is there any truth to this?

Cool, I had this same problem too with the voltage drop (not the engine shutting down on its own) and found this thread in a search. One more question though, once the engine is running and the grid heaters kick on will I see the light on the dash or does it not come on when the engine its running? Thanks!

The heater grid symbol, on the dash, only lights up as the truck preheats the intake, just before start up. It won't come back on, after the truck is running, but you will probably hear the relay click on and off, you may see the lights dim a little, and you will probably notice a drop on the voltage gauge.

"The other condition that will turn the grid heater off, is to engage the transmission and drive. "

That isn't abnormal at all. Both of my trucks will continue to cycle the heater girds, even while driving. I've had the heater grid kick on, even after the truck is fully warmed up, and I've slowed down to about 20-30 mph, at lower engine RPMs. Quite normal.
