Grid heater delete FYI

Since everyone is worried about codes with grid heater delete, I figured I'd give you my $0.01 (so simple it's not worth $0.02).

The relay is located next to the passenger side battery (obviously you can see my intake). You will need to remove the wire from the grid heater as well as the wire from the battery. In the picture is how I had things when I first did the delete. The wire from the battery is just pulled back and zip tied. I now have the wires completely removed.

EDIT: Technically you will STILL GET CODES (or at least I have been) BUT it is not a "hard" code that triggers the CEL. It's P2609

If you leave everything like this you will be code free

But, if you want to remove the relay completely you will have to do some modifying...all one needs to do is connect the two wires (circled below, they are basically caps) together using a resistor. Carl48 told me any risistor between 14 Ohms and 20 ohms will work ...the truck doesn't actually know if the grid heater is working, only that the two wires from the computer have a current flow.

And, yes it is that simple

How's the cold weather starting in Iowa without the grid heater?

When would it be a good idea to put the grid heat back in or can you do without it?

Even before I did the grid heater delete, i wouldn't wait for the heater to cycle, so I knew that the cold starting wouldn't be a problem. I've only had it on in the teens but the truck has started just fine. My original intentions were to put the delete on for the summer and run the heater in the winter but I don't think I will...or I'll see how it goes next winter and go from there...

I keep my truck plugged in when it gets cold anyways so I prob could get away with leaving it out all the time.

What do you gain from removing the grid heater? I talked to 04cummins a bit on the phone yesterday about it, he said he gained about 1 mpg. Why is this (this is my first dive into the diesel world)

Well the grid heater is a restriction in the airflow into the engine. Unlike gas engines, diesels don't have throttle bodies to control air flow. They are open, so the more air you can get in and out the better.

Yery nice! Thanks

I'm getting one as soon as there ready, but I'm not sure yet on leaving it on in the winter yet. It gets really cold here in Michigan. I see negatives numbers quite a few times in the winter
