lift pump and cp3

I see alot of new cummins owners confused about where the lift pump is located and confused between the lift pump and cp3 injection pump.

on 03 thru 04.5 trucks the lift pump is mounted on the fuel filter housing in the engine compartment,on the 05 and 06s the lift pump was moved into the fuel tank. The lift pump is the pump that supplies the cp3 injection pump with fuel. The cp3 is the high pressure pump that supplies the fuel rail with fuel. The cp3 is located on the right side of the engine if looking at it from the front it has three fuel lines on it, one supply line, one return line and the line that goes to the fuel rail. The cp3 is the same pump and located at the same place on trucks from 03 thru 06.

To add to that:

CP3's were on 2003 and 2004's.
CP3S3's started in 2004.5 to current.

The newer pumps are "suppose" to be improved and flow more.

From what I can tell by peoples dyno numbers, they do.

The CP3 also has a "built in" lift pump, the Dmax's don't use a seperate lift pump on there common rail system.

"The newer pumps are "suppose" to be improved and flow more."

That is incorrect. All the CP3s have the same flow.

I've been running a Walbro 392 since 2000. How long did your fuel pump last ?

John.....can you tell me the difference between the CP3's on the 2003 and 2004's and the CP3S3's on the 2004.5 to current.

They updated the # so why??? what does the "S3" stand for....series 3 maybe???

I have the cp3 on my truck and a brand new cp3s in a box in the garage that I bought because of a leak on my cp3 when I get around to doing the swap I will do a comparison to see if I can tell exactly what was changed.
