OCD over the Cummins
![]() |
Here is a link to the photo. I wonder if it is a S.O. vs. H.O. thing? Maybe the H.O.'s had that pump? Cheers! Chad http://www.chad.prioritylabel.ca/Cha...ins%20(57).JPG |

While you have it apart, can you measure the diameter of the plungers ? They will be either 6mm (roughly 1/4") or 8mm. Thanks.

Heee heee. Always looking for a free-bee. The injector tips are different as well. The spray pattern on the 600's is a little better and burns at a much higher BTU, generating a little more power. That and the ECM programming makes up the bulk of the difference. I'm pretty sure the DRBIII will only allow them to install software that matches your VIN number. They can’t put any software program on any ECM. It just won’t let them. You would have to purchase one of the downloaders/programmers on the market to reprogram for more power. Besides, the 600 engines have the third injection event to keep the exhaust hot, which works with the cat to meet emissions requirements. That additional squirt of fuel at each revolution doesn’t make power, just heat, and brings their mileage down a little on average as compared to your 555. If you could do it, the cons would probably far outweigh the pros. A downloader/programmer might would be a better performer for you.

They could, but they won't. EPA will only allow so many trucks to be produced meeting a certain emissions...changing the programming changes that number. I don't agree with this since reprogramming an older truck for newer emissions should actually be "better" as far as emissions are concerned. But the whole reprogramming is based on the EPA and the CAFE number a manufacturer must meet...one reason dodge titled the PT Cruiser a "truck". At one point you could have a early 24-valve "reprogrammed" (around here) from 215HP to 235HP by a local dealer for around $150...they offered to do mine when it was in for tranny issues, but I declined. I don't think they will do that anymore, at least none of the locals talk about it. I don't know if it was really a reflash or what, just telling you what went down. I have also heard that one of the TSBs for white smoke and poor performance of the early 600s was actually a reflash to a 610. I was told this was not the case at TDR, but a senior DC mechanic told me about this when I was in for a guage cluster issue (he needed to find out what TSBs had been done to my truck to know if he would need to reflash the new cluster)...again, just telling you what went down... steved |
