Cheap grid heater delete!
This "how to" explains how to gut your factory grid heater without damaging anything if you would like to return to "stock" at a later time. This makes your factory grid heater act like a grid heater delete block and all that is involved is your time. Should take less than 1 hour to complete. Will be doing this to a guys truck this weekend and will take pictures of the entire process. 1. Remove all items attached to the intake horn. On mine this included wiring on the back side(10mm nut), oil dipstick tube(12mm bolt), and the intercooler coupler(7/16 nut). 2. Remove wire lead from rear of grid heater(2 10mm nuts). 3. Remove intake horn and grid heater(4 10mm bolts). 4. Now to the longest step! Once you have the grid heater out you will have to remove the grids. There are 2 of these and each is held in at both ends by a bolt. Loosen the 2 bolts on the front of the grid heater(10mm socket/ratchet and 10mm wrench). After doing this you can pull out one end of both elements from behind the bolts as well as the side spacers for the elements. Now re tighten what you loosened. Once this is complete you will need to remove the other end of the elements. To do this you have to remove the element that has the largest gap inside to where you can get a set of needle nose plires in there to hold the small nut while using a 12mm socket/ratchet or 12mm wrench to remove the bolt. After this is removed you have access to remove the other element the same way. To get the plires in there you will have to slightly bend the elements one at a time when removing to keep out of the way. When these are removed keep the nuts and washers to put the bolts back in with. 5. Now you can either replace the bolts and washers as they were or you could tap the bolt holes and plug them. I chose to replace the bolts as they were. This requires you to use the needle nose plires to hold the nut to tighten both bolts. This process was tedious mainly just to get the nut back on the bolt. 6. Bolt on intake horn and all that was attached, grid and wire lead, as well as intake coupler. Everywhere that air could possibly leak I applied a small portion of high temp silicone gasket maker just for insurance. 7. To be code free I removed the two larger wires from the grid heater relay(large posts) and battery as "awenthol" on this site suggests. Place a 15ohm resistor between the two small wires attached to the small posts on the relay. Done! 8. Crank up, check for any leaks, and take it for a spin! Good Luck!
