Introduction & Tranny Questions?!?
Hello all I just got my very first dodge diesel and thought I would introduce myself and ask a question or two at the same time. I just bought a 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 with the 5.9 cummins and the Auto tranny, single rear wheels. The truck is basically stock with the exception of dual 4" mbrp exhaust, volant intake, 295/70/R17 tires and firestone airbags out back. This truck will get dual usage. It is my daily driver, as well as a Hot Shot Truck for the oilfield. I have only had the truck a week and its been to texas (3700 miles round trip) twice already :thumbsup :thumbsup I tow a 30' PJ Gooseneck with up to 16,000 pounds on the trailer (all though that much weight isnt typical), and have put 2-3000 pounds in the bed (loving the airbags)... Now for the questions...... I do not want insane horsepower for the truck but I do want more (dont we all)... I do not ever want to go above 500hp (probly will never even make it to that)... Is there anything I can do to the stock tranny to upgrade it before anything happens (and that will handle that kind of power) or do i just need to plop down the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and buy a built tranny? Thanks in advance!!!!!!! Adam Revolution Services LLP |

glad to have another member.Carrying that kind of a load I would think you are better off spending the money upfront and doing the tranny right. On a stock tranny without towing heavy I would not load over 80hp on the auto. Better to spend a few extra bucks in the beginning than to need to tow it to a service place and have them rake you over the coals. You will want a set of gauges for the truck(pyro, tranny, boost). For another easy power adder look into an aftermarket upper intake manifold (also sometimes called a boost elbow) googling them I have seen dynos of +20 horsepower on a lightly modded truck.

You can never go wrong with buying a built tranny. At the same time you have to kinda line up what your going to do with it which you already have. You could probably get buy with a triple disk converter and valve body and i would get a Smarty to help pull your load along with a set of gauges.
