Differential fluid choice?

Hey Folks I own a 07 5.9l Dodge 2500. They tell me at the dealers when they ran my VIN. I have the 11inch Diff in rear and electronic 4x4. They tell me I need 75-90w Diff fluid and HAS TO BE gl-5 FLUID. I do not need the additive even though it has limited slip cause the clutches are cone type and do not require the additive on american axles. As for the transfer case ATF-4. My question is this. What is the BEST 75-90w GL-5 SYN fluid out there? I want the best for my baby. Thanks

I've read good things about Amsoil Severe Gear but I've never used Amsoil myself.

I use the Amsoil severe gear, just started with this truck but have always used Mobil 1 prior to that and had no complaints....I think any quality synthetic will work! Also before you take off the cover verify that the dealer has the parts...mine did not....so I bought a vac and drained it that way.

If you have the diesel, you've got the AAM (American axle manufacturer) 11.5" rear end. If it has a limited slip, it's a helical worm gear style. No clutches, No cones. Period. It works by building fluid pressure within the 2 helical worm gears. This is the ONLY differential made for this rear end except for the open diff. It does not use limited slip additive either. There is nothing electrical about it. You might have the electronic tranfer case (push button 4wd) as opposed to manual lever on the floor. Chrysler service manual says to use 75W-95 synthetic gear lube for all 11.5 rear ends. :thumbsup

I have used Amsoil Severe Gear and Royal Purple since new and with almost 75K on the truck, I still have machining marks on my gears. They literally look like new. So, I can definately recommend the Amsoil and RP. Good stuff...

Would this be the same for my 06 3500 4x4 ? I am also thinking of putting bigger diff. covers on to hold more fluid, or is stock good enough?

Yep, same axle AAM 1150 and there's nothing wrong with adding a bigger cover to hold more fluid. Just put in the called for gear oil as mentioned above and you'll be all set. The larger covers are usually made of different materials and design that would dissipate heat faster and aided by more gear oil in hopes to keep the gear oil temperature down. It all heats up under driving conditions.

How much will I need to do both differentials if I just use stock covers and do they take a gasket or can I just use Permatex silicone?

Gasket is reuseable. If I remember right, 4.25 qts for the rear and 3.25 qts for the front. If you have 8 qts you'll be good with some to spare.
