Smoking Clutch

Hi all,
I think I have a problem. Today when I went to pick up my son from school I was waiting in line. I was just sitting there with the clutch pedal to the floor and creeping up as the cars ahead of me started to move to get to the door and I noticed that my truck was smoking. It was that all to familiar clutch burning smell. After I got my son I proceeded out of the parking lot and it was a little difficult to put into gear. So, I stopped and shut her off for about 20 minutes to let the clutch cool down and then went home which is about 5 miles from the school with no problems. What would make the clutch do that? I do not dog my truck and it only has 33k on the clock. I haven't even pulled anything with it... yet. It's all stock. Am I looking at a new clutch in the near future or what? I really do not want to replace one yet but I need my truck. Thanks

Every bad clutch i have ever had on any car had no problem idling with it depressed. They only smoked while slipping in high gear. I did have a Mustang years ago with a cable actuated clutch that would smoke when the clutch was depressed for a length of time. Turns out the cable was stretched and causing the friction surface and pressure plate to barely contact creating a massive amount of heat. Try bleeding the clutch hydrualics, and if that doesn't work i would check the slave/master cylinder.

What gear were you creeping up in?

if you thought you were in first but third or fifth that would most likely do it.

If you were riding the pedal to inch it forward, you are forcing the clutch to slip, they get some miles on them, they start to get hot when you do that, they start to burn.... up...

That's what might have happened now that I think about it. I must have been in third gear. I think I am going to replace it anyways since I have the money right now and do not want it to go out when I don't. Thanks for the replies.
