I think it is a T40 torx bit or some people call them star bits. The back bolts to the transfer case with a hex head so whatever size socket it was, but I don't remember that.

ya it is torx but i had to buy one that was not at 90* so it would fit up in there. the bolts are lock-tight on there. make sure you dont strip one of them.

I stripped one and it was a pain the rear to remove the stripped bolt. I replaced with hex head and lock washers (metric and 10.9 hardened) to get away from the torx head. The front axle bolts are difficult to get to. Get the right tool first before you tackle them. Then jack up the front axle to spin the driveshaft. As previously mentioned the bolts have the red loctite. The transfer case end of the driveshaft is relatively easy to remove.
