Truck only starts with starting fluid?

I started the the truck and it runs fine, but will only start with starting fluid and when I turn the truck off it wont re-start it just spins over. It feels like an old Ford 7.3 I used to have that the glow plugs were gone, but this truck dosnt have glow plugs. And when I take off the programmer the truck feels really slow but not missing or anything sure acceleerates slow. Anybody have any suggestions on what the problem could be? The truck is a 03 dodge 2500 HO. It has no codes either

ummm i'm not an expert but i think starting fluid will really f your truck up. i have a stock intake and it says right on the housing not to use starting fluids and that severe engine damage can occur.

you're asking for broken pistons, bent rods, cracked heads using starter fluid in a Cummins.

plugged fuel filters
water in diesel
failed fuel pump
plugged intake from collapsed air filter

throw the can of starting fluid away. $200 tow is really cheap compared to a broken engine or the ether back flashes thru the intake system and blows your front end off with pieces left in you

the only thing you have to worry about the starting fluid as long as you dont dump the whole can is the grid heater causing it to explode. thats what the warning is for. It sounds like you loosing prime or sucking air, possible failed lift pump.

Don't know if this will help or not, I also have an 03 100,000 miles that was doing the same thing. I took to dealer and in the 03's there was a bulletin to move the fuel pump from up by the fuel filter to in the tank. I told them go ahead. $1000 later same thing. Would have to use a spray of silicone to start (recommended per dealer not starting fluid). They then told me it was fuel injectors and wanted another $4200. I took the truck back. Ended up adding stenodyne lubrocity to lube the injectors. Helped a little. Finally I ran the tank dry on a hunch added more additive and fresh fuel and instantly has not been a problem again for 5 months. Yours may not be the same but its a cheap thing to try. Good luck.

have an 03 as well, it quit running and the stealership wanted $6000.00 to fix it. Initially it would not start at all and would only run briefly on starting fluid. I installed an Airdog FP100 lift pump and still had the same issue. I blocked off the prv on the common rail and now it started on starting fluid and would run great but would only start with starting fluid and just the smallest squirt would make it start. I finally pulled my injectors and found that #6 was cracked, luckily a friend of mine has a diesel shop and had an injector I could use. I dont know if you have a pressure box on yours, I had and EDGE EZ and I am still waiting for a call back from EDGE Products to see if this is a common problem with this box.

Well actually the warning on the air box is for the grid heater but if used enough can bend over the top ring in the gland of the piston and the engine can become addicted to it...n for your problem have u checked your fuel pressure ? I'd start with the basics

check your fuel pressure, lift pump, inkection pump... also check you rail pressure sensor, could possibly be your fca (fuel control actuator) going bad, it is the black unit on the back of the cp3 toward the crank side, that has the electric harness plugged into it... could be a numerous amount of things, but it does sound fuel related...:thumbsup
