Lift pump upgrade?

I was wondering about upgrading the lift pump on generation 3s. are most of you doing it just to get all the power out of your chip or is the fuel system still burning up injector pumps like it did on the gen 2s. i have not seen a lot of things on the gen 3s pumps going bad like i did with the vp44s. just curious. thanks

The stock lift pump won't support the mod's i was after. So i eliminated it and went with the Fass pump.

I and a growing number of 3rd gen owners are going with a Walbro setup. Richard at GDP who sponsors this forum is better able to talk about the particulars for that than I am, but I have one of his lift pump replacement systems, and it has worked flawlessly for almost 10k miles now!!!! My truck has never gotten this good of mileage, idled as smooth or accelerated as smoothly since I installed the GDP Walbro. Talk with Richard, he's a straight shooter!!!:thumbsup

Yeah, the 3rd Gens' lift pump track record is not really any better than the 2nd Gens. On the newer rigs, they have relocated the pump back to the tank (in-tank design), but they are still using the same o'l crappy Carter pumps. Most are upgrading because the Carter's just can't keep up with even the mildest of modifications. There are a few here that are upgrading just because they don't want to deal with the problem later.

Be it Walbro or Fass just do it to save the headace later, Our 600 was able to pull the fuel pressure to ZERO with a 3k load on a mountain pass.........the Fass went in faster than anything, the old l/p is hangin on the wall with about 9 other 2nd gen l/p's...........adding another original to the collection tomorrow for a guy

The good thing, if you can call it that, is that if the new LP dies the truck won't run. That way it doesn't kill the CP3 pump. That's where the problem lies in the 2nd gens. The VP44 will continue sucking fuel but it overheats without a pusher pump and then it dies....
The funny thing is that the CP3 could supply a stock engine just fine, even without a pusher pump....

I have ordered the FASS to support my mods. I will receive it this week and will get it installed this weekend.

2004.5 Lift Pump Conversion

My 2nd on engine lift pump failed yesterday. I need the truck running for a trip on Friday so I haven't had time to research. I can get the Dodge kit that converts the pump to the tank for about $400 tomorrow. Does anyone have an idea how much time I will need to convert from the on-engine to the in-tank lift pump ? Is there any aftermarket conversion kit that is better that I could get by tomorrow ?
