Airdog install

OK,

So i have a few gallons left in my tank, and I want to drop it to put in the liberty module.

Can I use the in tank pump to drain the fuel tank? In other words, attach a longer hose on the filter canister on the motor, open up the valve, bump over the motor, then let it drain through the filter housing into a gas can???

I don't see why this wouldn't work. heck, I forgot to close the valve once and started the truck up and got diesel all over the driveway!

I just want to make the tank as light as possible so it's easier to drop.

Also....

Anyone with a 06+ quad cab short bed can install an Airdog using the stock bracket? For the life of me, I can't get it to fit. It seems that the body mount and the transfer case are too close together to fit the bracket in correctly....

May have to cut and modify the bracket????

You could take the bed off pretty easy and leave the tank alone. As far as the bracket goes, no, it won't fit on the newer 04.5 and up short bed trucks... I ran into that problem myself. You'll have to hack it up and put something together that will. I got tired of messing with it in 30 degree weather crawling under the truck and said to hell with it - can wait til warmer weather...

Modify the bracket with the bed still on there so you can be sure everything clears....

Yeah I got a reply from John (Jbarker) and he said that you have to hack off the miscellaneous bracket at the top of the frame and move it closer to the fuel tank.

Problem is that my traction bar bracket is in the way. I think what I am going to have to do is hack up the bracket, like you said, and make something work.... I have no welding equipment, so I am going to have to have it done by a shop, when I figure out what the heck to do!

That bracket welded to the truck is a pain and does nothing but get in the way. you can cut it off as I have done a few times to get it to fit. I have seen that bracket on long beds as well as short beds. and from 2001 and up. again not every truck has it. from what i can find out it used for the assembly line as the frame moves down the line.

Pulling the Bed is the easiest way to do the entire job especially if you have to install the draw straw. We have pulled a bed off in about 20 minutes compared to fighting a 4 ft long tank with fuel in it.
six bolts and your done. the first one i did was a 100 that uses the OEM tank feed and i fought trying to get that oem clip off of the tank while it was in place for over 1 1/2 hours. i could have pulled the bed and finished the entire deal in that time

I wish I had a lift or the manpower to lift the bed.....

I think by slightly modding the bracket, I can use it closer to the transfer case. I figured I could cut off the portion the airdog mounts to, and then weld it directly onto the center of the plate that mounts to the frame.

You can do that. That's what I was originally going to do. But when I got it cut off and tacked back on like that I test mounted the AD unit and found that the filters were hanging down just a tad below the bottom of the frame rails. It's not much and maybe not really a problem but I didn't like it so plan B involves extending the AD unit out closer to the center of the truck where the driveline hump is so I can move it upwards a tad and the filters will not be hanging down at all. The trouble with that is the bracket is gonna be kind of long and extended. Not sure if that would cause any problems? Really I don't see why it would. On the bed removal, surely you've got somebody that can help you take it off? Only need one helper it's not that heavy... One more thing, I believe the airdog is actually under the back part of the truck cab so whether or not the bed is off while modding the bracket really doesn't matter...

well, it looks like I figured it out.

I had to flip the bracket over and then redrill it (since the stock holes are upside down now. I also had to do what Dsljnki said and redrill the airdog mount to frame mount holes so that the airdog unit clears not only the floor of the cab, but so that the outputs on the airdog do not hit the stock fuel and brake lines. I am going to try and take pictures during the whole process....

As far as fiddling with the tank - mine is almost empty. I plan to open the valve on the filter housing - connect a hose to it and run it to a new gas can. Then bump over the starter to get the fuel pump to pump out the fuel.... We'll see if that works!

Yeah that's what I did - just flip the frame rail bracket - then you clamp the AD mounting bracket to that extension it bolts to and have ready made guide holes for redrilling and flipping the unit right side up, but it has to be cut off and rewelded down a little bit lower... After that was done I found I couldn't set the AD unit up as high as I wanted it though...

Some of my bracket flipping hole drilling details may be a little off I'm going by memory from a few months back and editing this as necessary... I know you're doing exactly what I tried though and you surely know what I'm meaning lol...
