Weird boost pressures, MAP sensor?

Well I got a boost and EGT gauges installed a few weekends ago, I have the post in the performance parts forum but I wanna move my question here for more exposure...

Cruising down the highway I got about 8 psi and 750*EGT and that all seems normal from what I've read on here. But WOT rowing through the gears when im at about 25-2600rpm I hit 34psi I boost drops dramatically to about 25/26 then climbs to 28/29 and by that time I'm grabbing the next gear. Happens in 3rd 4th and 5th... I thought it was just bouncing off the waste gate but in my other post someone mentioned the MAP sensor.. Telling the truck to defuel. No codes or nothing. I took it out and it looked alright, it's got a light coating of this white crust all over the plastic that's inside the plenum. Does that sound like the culprit for my boost to drop like that? Is there a way to test the map sensor or do I just replace it and see if that fixes the problem? Lately I've only been gettin 16-17 mpg on the freeway.. I always cruise about 18-1900 rpm. I use to get higher mileage. Could a bad sensor cause the drop in mileage too?

Add a boost fooler and see what the boost does.

What you are describing is normal for a stock truck. The WG is being opened by the ECU to control boost.

The mileage changes, hard to tell as what you are quoting is normal.

Sounds normal for a stock truck. The boost fooler will hold the WG shut and a smarty will give you more fuel. I'll get up to 40 psi when I really get on the throttle, pulling I see about 30-32. It stays much cooler when pulling because the WG isn't bleeding off air.

Yesterday instead of WOT I rowed through the years at about 75% throttle and I hit 29 psi and she dropped down to 20 and raised up to 25 and then I had to shift... Would the ECU tell the WG to open even at 29? I remember someone making their own boost fooled on here but they had to cut up their whole harness and I'm not to jive on cutting up my harness... Who makes a good fooler? Would EFI live be able to boost fool also when it comes out for 03-05 trucks?

The Quad boost fooler is about as good as any. Just buy one an don't mess with the harness.

A cheap way to do it is put a pair of vice grips on the boost reference hose on the turbo and control boost with your right foot.

EFI should be able to turn the WG control off and on and hopefully set when it opens. Hiowever, until they deliver it (don't hold your breath) we won't know what the capabilities are.

Quick update, pulled the trigger and bought a new map sensor. Definately made a difference, now it hits 34 psi, drops to 29-30 and holds there. WOT and 75%+ throttle I can hold 29-30 psi easily. Thanks everyone for their input. So I guess it was a combination of a failing MAP sensor and bouncing off the WG.

Well this morning driving to work I noticed I'm now running 10psi and 700* going down the highway completely empty at 1900 rpms. Does that seem about right? Everyone else seems to be running 5-8 psi

If it was a constant 10 psi even on the level thats high. If that was on a small grade then its pretty normal. EGT's look good though.

What gauge is doing boost, electronic or analog?

Yep flat ground for 30 miles. When I would be behind someone it would drop down to 8 but I figured it's because of the draft. Open road, no wind, cruising 10 psi. I got an Autometer analog boost gauge

Well maybe something broke in, on the drive home today with clear roads. 1900 rpms, 85* weather, 7mph headwind, I ran 8-9 psi, 750*
Weird is right. Could outside temp have anything to do with it? It was 50* this morning

Well the quadzilla boost fooler landed in the mail today. Needless to say I got no more weird numbers. I can hold 34-35 psi all day long. going about 92-93mph I hit 39 psi. It will be interesting to see what I can reach pulling 10k over the grapevine in November. Oh and at 39psi WOT I only saw 1200*. before I could hit 1300 really gettin on it to get on the freeway. 1200 is the highest I've seen so far. Everything as far as cruising temps and psi is back to normal
