Tone Ring Mod

Hello All,

I am planning on doing the tone ring mod this weekend and have a few questions for those who have done it.

I have read many posts but still am unsure exactly how much to file and move the ring, or how much to retorque the pulley bolts.

Thanks

HUH!? I hope your not talking about the silencer ring. I'm curious to know what the "Tone Ring Mod" is if its not...

From what I understand, not much needs to be taken out of the pin hole, the slop in the bolt holes is what will limit the amount you can turn the ring.
I believe the torgue is 30ftlbs + 60*.

Thanks for the replies. I have read where people just grind out the hole and let the bolts be the stop. Any idea how many degrees this is?

I just ground down the 4 bolts holes (counterclock wise) not quite 1/4" total. Then when you mount it back on, you should be able to turn it (CW) that far before tightening the bolts.

I don't know if there is any true way to figure out the total amount of degrees but I have heard about 2*. Almost the same as the RokkTech sensor. But that sensor is calibrated for 2* if you go the complete way.

I actually have done both on my truck. I did notice a difference with the Tone Ring Mod, and since it was free. .

Figure it is easy to test once completed. It helps to remove the 2 bottom raditor bolts so you can squish the bottom of it in a little to give more room for your hands. Then pull the serp belt, loosen up the 4 bolts to the pulley. Turn all the way, tighten back down. put belt back on and go for a ride. I have done the adjustment on the side of the road while testing.

I did the TRM on my 03. I drilled and filed the dowel pin hole until the bolts would hit and I advanced it as far as I could. It made a big difference on that 03 SO in off the line power and in mileage. I put a Rokktech on my 07 and although there is no power difference I can feel, I got a 1 mpg gain.
As far as torque on the crank bolts......... I used a long handled 1/2" drive ratchet and 3lb hammer to get the bolts loose and that's what I used to "Torque" them back on.
Just remember to spin the ring the right way. Many people, but not me, while laying upside down under the truck have spun it backwards and retarded it and then wondered why power was down. I didn't do that though. Not me.........

So this advances the timing?, what if you have a chip/programer that does timing is it safe to do both?.

The Truck will let you know, if you get alot of timing rattle, you will then need to return the tone ring back to its original position.
