Timing rattle?

I have a horrible rattle only at idle and I can't seem to make it go away and I'm wondering if it's timing. I'm only running my Predator on the Performance/Eco tune so it shouldn't be adding timing. Not that it matters because even without the DL it does it anyway. I'm wondering if the previous owner did the DYI timing increase mod on the crank sensor (I think it's the crank sensor). That only effects timing a couple degrees though so it shouldn't give timing rattle right? I'm lost, just trying to nail this rattle down... The truck appeared to be totally stock when I bought it a few months ago and have not found signs of any previous mods besides exhaust.

I'm almost positive Diablo adds timing on Performance.

These trucks vary from one to another. I believe my truck has stock timing that is very mild. Yours may be more advanced and IF previous owner did the timing mod, you may be maxed out and the programmer is pushing it past the limit. Be careful.

This truck had nothing aftermarket when purchased besides exhaust so I find it a long shot that the previous owner would have done that type of intrusive mod. Just went and checked and the Predator is not causing the the rattle, it doesn't get better or worse without the programmer.

Next question is, Are ya sure it's timing rattle you're hearing?

You sound like you know a thing or two about diesel engines. Possible CP3 noise or injectors? If I didn't add some additive for a few tankfuls, my injectors sounded rattley...

Have you changed your lift pump yet? I see your truck is an 04 similar to my 03. I had pretty loud timing rattle at idle for a few weeks before my lift pump went south. All better after the new pump went in.

If you're using a fuel additive that adds cetane, stop using it. Too much cetane will cause the injected fuel to ignite sooner thus advancing timing.

I have not checked for codes but my check engine light has never come on. I'll verify there are no codes tonight. The only additive I use is one quart of 2-stroke every tank and the rattle does not change with or without it. I don't even know for sure if it is timing rattle, it's just a guess. The truck runs and idles very smoothly, just the whole truck seems to rattle at idle. I'm open to any ideas. This has been like this for a few months and doesn't seem to get any better or worse. A lift pump would be an expensive guess to try and fix this.

I think your injectors might be clogged somewhat, which will give you a rattle. I had it, I knew it.... I loaded my truck up and hit the highway for a 150 mile trip and at around 75-80mph when I was able. Kept boost up, kept rail pressure up, kept egt's higher. Truck ran like new afterwards. These trucks were meant to be worked... HARD...
