A third injection event was introduced to quiet down the truck. It also helped with emissions? Not sure on that.

03-04 also use a smaller turbo, HE341 as compared to the HE351 on the newer trucks. Easy swap if you can find a good used one

Early 03 trucks could also be the lower HP rated motors and have a 47RE instead of the later 48RE.

For just power they are comparable. Both will suffer catastrophic failure if you push them too hard. All things being equal, the piston design on the 03-04 is a bit more conducive to longer life under high HP conditions than the later engines, but, the later engine shave better valves and seats.

The later engines have more power potential but neither will live long at the levels they can be pushed to without mods.

Early 03 had forged rods as compared to the later motors having powder cast cracked cap rods if your looking to push high hp u need the forged rods the 2 injection events got better fuel milage but other than that I not sure a dropped valve seat weened me of cr trucks forever and I made sure my 24valve had an so head without replace able valve seats before I ported and oringed it
