Weird smell, need help.

I've searched and searched - I've got an 06 with about 66k on her. I had an oil change about 3 weeks ago, and about a week later started to notice this "smell." I smelled it most potent underneath the wheel well on the driver side after about 5-10 minutes of normal driving. The passenger side stinks, but not that noticeable. Every once and a while I get a whiff of it at the stoplight. I can't tell if its oil, burning plastic, antifreeze...? I did the brakes about 2 months ago, and I pulled them a part again today, and everything looks fine. I changed both batteries last week too (one was bad), which I thought could have been the smell, but it wasn't.

I bought the oil change package from my dealer, and called and asked what kind they are using. They are using penzoil.

Truck is running great, stopping fine, normal temps, etc. Any suggestions???

It's driving me nuts!!!

Seriously not to be a smart axx. Have someone else smell it that can differentiate between the smell of oil, burning plastic, antifreeze or brakes. Each has it's own very distinct smell.

Penzoil doesn't make a CI-4 or CJ-4 diesel engine oil.

Probably Rotella 15w40. Rotella uses a unique polymer viscosity modifier that stinks as the byproducts boil off the oil. Bothers some more than others.

Most dealers use bulk 15w40, what ever bulk dealer bids the cheapest. They sell the Mopar 15w40 at the parts counter, jugged by Valvoline, their Premium Blue

Sounds like Rotella to me as well. The 15-40 has a more potent smell than the 5-40 syn. I really noticed this the first time I used the 15-40, for the first 2-3K any idle time or stop light time and it would make your eyes water. Since switching to the sun, (which I should be using anyway in Mi) it really isn't noticeable. A little right after the oil change but that's about it. Maybe ask to talk to someone at the dealer who can prove were they got the last shipment of oil from.

If your coolant level is low, check your pass side of the engine block at the rear for a 2.5 inch coolant hose make sure its not leaking. I had a pin hole leak making a smell and that was the problem.

Oil from the front axle can smell really bad if the seals leak a little and water gets in. If they changed it and filled it up to proper level with a leaking seal you would have some oil coming out near the U-joint.

Thanks guys, I'm working on still pin pointing. I'm going to check the front axle.

Coolant level is not low, as of right now. I'm going to keep an eye on it.

Lastly I'll get ahold of the dealer after I have a buddy smell it.

It's completely odd, and straight pissing me off!

I'd bet the farm it's "rosmella". Have the same issue with my truck, no leaks no codes no issues just stinks all the time. Called my dealer who does my changes, sure enough it's bulk 15w40 Rotella.

What's up with the little hose clamp by the turbo?

I let my captain smell it tonight, he said it's definitely coolant.
