My 03 Cummins Will NOT Start!

Just got it a week ago. Its a 03 2500 auto, 4wd, 192k. It ran great Friday, let it sit over the weeknd and it will turn over normal but will not run. Fuel pressure gauge in cab says normal and can hear the pump working. I dont really know much about diesels this is my first. I hope it doesnt need injectors. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

I came home after work today and I tried it again and it started first time. Think its my intake heater messing up? It was 52 deg this morning and about 73 deg in the afternoon. I'm stumped, I just hope it doesn't do this while I'm away from home. Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have a way to check for codes? Also is the fuel filter dirty?

Could be the injectors letting go also

Yes I checked for codes but nothing showed up. I have a Superchips Flashpaq and I changed the setting back to stock from performance and didnt drive it and let it sit all weeknd. When I went to start it this morning it would not start only spin over. I set it back to performance this morning and tried it but nothing. It was making me late for work so I got in the old tundra and made it to work. Came home and before I tried anything I tried to start it and it fired right up like it should. ??

I started it again the other day and it cranked up and ran good. Ive noticed tho that if you rev it up a little in park it revs good, but when it comes down to idle it idles up and down a few times then smoothes out. It doesnt smoke when cranked/running and no engine codes, FCA maybe?

FCA maybe but I have read of about countless people changing the FCA with no result including myself. I don't think I've ever read of the FCA fixing the problem as a matter of fact, not to say I know all. Do you see any smoke on start-up or when it's doing the choppy idle down?

I bet you have injectors sticking open making it impossible to get to 6000psi for the injectors to fire to start the motor. Get a contribution test run at the dealer to find out.

do you have the original fuel lift mounted on the back of the fuel filter housing?

when you have a no start condition, open the fuel drain valve on the bottom of the filter, drain all fuel, close valve. crack open 1 or so turns on the filter lid. have someone crank engine. watch filter for diesel overflow, should occur in less than 5 seconds and pour out in good stream.
or you can run fuel filter drain tube into large plastic bottle, open drain valve, hit key then release- fuel pump on for 30 seconds, should be more than 1/2 quart in 20 seconds, deduct amount that was static in filter

if lots of fuel from lift pump?

pull injectors and send in for testings

if they're the original factory injs., i'd just replace all 6 with Bosch Cummins brand new from Cummins parts counter, ya know what you're getting there for your hard earned money and they cover their warranties, no games
some areas have Bosch parts counters that sell to the public retail or if you have business license, can get a discount

Thanks for all your info guys! It doesn't do this all the time. If its fairly warm outside and I drive it everyday it does fine. Today it wouldnt start, the temp said 59f, truck would spin over good but not fire. Then when I came home later it was around 73f and it took a few more revolutions to get goin but it did start (no ether). I'm thinking its something electrical, solenoid, or sensor, but it doesnt have any codes. Im going to see what the local shop says tomorrow to see if they can figure it out.

It seems to start ok when its warm outside (60f or above). I tried one trick I read on here, to rev the motor to redline and see if it stays there or comes down fairly quick. Tried that and it blew white smoke like I was doin a burnout and came back down to idle and sounded like crap, took prob 15 secs to smooth back out, tried it again and it blew smoke but didnt idle as bad, sounds like injectors to me, im gonna try to take it to a shop today. Thanks.
