Changing the oil today and remembered this sticky. Low and behold, well on my way to having a hole in the insulation. Once again Thanks for the post.

I remembered reading on TDR about a little wire that rubbed bare when I first got my truck three years ago...well, I found it, and it was bare. I found I had looked at the WRONG wire then...I had looked at the wire with the connector, it was the OTHER wire!

The wire is part of the AC circuit, but IIRC it is also part of the CPS (crank position sensor) circuit. You can see the oil filter right above the wiring...the wire rubs a bolt head on the AC compressor and runs to a AC pressure sensor next to the AC compressor. I ran a little RTV over the bare spot, added a piece of convoluted tubing, and ziptied it up a little better.

I had a intermittent rough idle, and a very lopey high idle. After I fixed it, it coughed and stumbled, just like it does when you replace the CPS. It completely cured my rough idle, intermittent hard/bucking start, and lopey high idle.

If you can see the pictures, it is a VERY small bare spot.

This is one of those things I had put away into the "ah-ha" files so long ago and, for whatever reason, decided to look a little deeper tonight since I was already there.

My power is back to normal, with very little smoke. Rough/hard start is gone...idle is normal. Things runs like it did when new...I also gained between 2 and 4 psi of boost. The thing acted like I was losing an injector and like the timing was retarded...

Awesome post!!!!! I am new to this site as I am new to owning a Dodge. The last couple months, my truck has been ideling rough and seems to crank over a lot in order to start. I figured something was not right. This really sounds like it could be the prob.

So, where excatually can I find this wire? I gather from the pic, that it is under the truck? Thanks a lot for any help and for this posting. I love this site.

THANK YOU for posting this, it saved me tonight:
I just had my truck die tonight, it was running fine, stopped for fuel, when I started the truck back up it was running really rough like it was misfiring and black smoke was pouring out, I limped it to the end of the parking lot and it died, would not start again it just cranked and cranked, this is 8 pm. No trouble codes on the PMT, So I immedietly get on my iphone and get on here quick search, read this thread, its pitch black out so I just grabbed every wire I could see on the passenger's side and wiggled them, truck fired right up. I guess tomm I need to find the bad spot and fix it.

had rough idle for some time now. just sounded OFF coming out of the exhaust (straight pipe). got under there today and unplugged the AC plug. i moved it up so it wasnt laying on the side of the compressor with the wires all bent up. plugged it back in and truck seemed to idle better. i zipped tied the wires up so there were no bends in them.

i never found the bare spot. does anyone have any better pictures or descriptions of where the wire rubs?
