Are you sure it's just not sounding like a diesel?

Mine just started making the same kind of noise about a week ago. Its only when its in gear and it sounds like its coming from the transmission area

Welcome to the site!

I moved this to the 3rd gen powertrain forum for better exposure. More people that have the same type truck will get a look at it.

Most diesels make odd combustion noises with even slightly less than perfect injectors. These newer quieter engines just makes it easier to hear it. Most noises that are dependent on rpm or throttle position are usually fuel related, with the exception of noises that are present at idle (when the engine has the most vibration) and go away when the engine is sped up. Things to look for are loose fuel lines, bolts on the flywheel , etc. Try to listen closely and find the general location of the noise that will help narrow the search for a cause.
