K&N and Cummins TD

About to do some maintenance on my truck - fuel and air filters, differential and transfer case fluids, etc. Thinking of putting in a K&N filter - not an intake mod. just a filter to replace the Mopar one that's probably in there. Thought I remembered reading somewhere that Cummins recommends against the K&N. Anyone else recall this?

I like the K&N's if for no other reason because they're a lifetime investment. They pay for themselves after about three changes of a normal filter, so it's a no-brainer from a cost standpoint. Has anyone else that's gone w/ a K&N filter noticed any gains in fuel mileage? That was the biggest thing I noticed when I popped in a K&N in my last truck. Just curious.

K&n

I had a K&N drop in and I might have gotten a little better fuel economy but not much. As for power, not really. I have the filter still if you want it you can have it, just pay shipping

Minimal mpg's and power gains, sure can hear the turbo whistle now though.

I haven't had a problem with mine. I checked the blades and such, no oil at all. I am a minimalist though and let it fully dry before putting it back in the truck. Is there a intake system that doesn't use an oil on their filters?

i had a K*N on mine and noticed alot of crap making it thru the filter as well as oil.
switched to a better filter, but i know AEM & AFE both offer dryflows, i'm sure others as well.

Quadzilla teamed up with AFE and they have a dry filter out. I have heard many people killing their turbos with the k&n because of the k&n filters letting too much trash through. IT'S A MUCH BETTER INVESTMENT TO ORDER A COMPLETE KIT

no its not. you gain no power. you gain no MPG. ive taked to many many cummins techs and they say the worst thing you can do for longevity of your motor is to put an aftermarket system in. if you bought a cummins for its legandary longevity then put a drop in in. like the S&B. mine fits so snugly that i struggle to get it in. aftermarket systems do not fit together like the factory system does. it has many rubber fittings and things wedge together, instead of these parallel fittings that are just held together by hose clamps.

check out the joints on your stock set up and how it fits together versus a k and n kit, or s and b kit or AFE...aem...so on

Really !

I just got red of my 1999 2500 it had a K&N on it the whole time I had it. I got it with it. It had close to 300,000 miles on it when it went away running great. Never a problem. I had no comparison though. I also have a 95 Cummins with the K&N also came with it.

Now I have a 2005 that didn’t come with it, so I figure I put one on it and I did and had never heard anything bad on it till now. I feel like I waisted my money now maybe?

When I purchased it, they didn’t give it to me it coast more than I liked. I never reset the air restriction indicator on my 99 ever and don’t know if the 95 has one.

Anyway on the 2005 the filter was pretty clean but the button released the mechanism when I pushed it showing me it had restriction. So naturally I put a K&N on it.

The oil never hurt my other turbo.

Now my question here is so to know weather to get the K&n out of there or keep it.

To me the exhaust goes over the turbine which is connected to the compressor for lack of better word using jet engine theory. The turbine and compressor are connected by a shaft with the turbine bearing supporting this shaft. This bearing is oiled by engine oil pressure. And the intake air never crosses the turbine

As the compressor sucks air through the filter powered by the turbine spinning off exhaust gas. It sends this air to the intake via the cooler at the radiator not over the turbine. This oil would never get to the turbines of the turbo and the compressor is a stainless and I inspected mine regularly and have never found any oil on this and I use plenty when I clean my filter.

So my question is..

Is my theory wrong here as I don’t have a cut away turbo I can see or is the oil damaging the Cummins engine by going in the intake of the engine?

What was said by Cummins that discourages the K&N filter to be used?

Help me decide to keep my filter or not.

Thanks
Carl

I too, feel like I may have wasted some money but I still have the entire stock system. I guess I will do some more reading but in the meantime make a switch over and move the K&N over to the sled tonight as the BHAF will slide right on the tubing.

wow! what a great debate this caused. i just talked to the dodge dealership that is doing some service on my truck today. the head tech. said that the drop in k&n's are fine and are a good investment for the cummins engine. opinions are like @$$holes - everybody has 'em, so i'm sure i'll get more than one on that thought too.
