I have a 2006 dodge ram 2500 with a 4spd automatic and i was going to building it but thought about putting a built 6spd auto in it instead and I was wondering if the ecm would since the higher gears and still shift or if I would need to have the computer reflashed with the 6spd auto program or if I could even reprogram it through my bullydog?
i didn't think the bullydog would but wasn't sure. but i was talking to a mechanic at city diesel near my house and he said he had the ability to reflash ecm's because he had to overwrite some programmers on trucks because they would encrypt files when you connect them to the truck like the bullydog and it would cause problems when you go to hook up other programmers.
The 68RFE needs a PCM to control it, your 06 has such critter and no programming to enable communications. You would have to use an Ally and a stand alone trans controller to get a 6 speed auto to work.
ok so if i built the 48RE for towing what brand would be the best to go with? i only know of suncoast and ats. Are there any others that are good or is it really only suncoast and ats?
Honestly this all a matter of opinion, but I have heard nothing but good about Firepunk. They have different tranny options based on your goal and are easy to talk to when they aren't out of the shop racing. Another couple brands you might check out are Garmon, and Goerend. I would use these ahead of the two you mentioned.
Or find a good local shop to build you one. Warranty and refresh work is much easier if it's local.
There are a lot of builders as good or better than Suncoast or ATS. Goerends does not build anymore, just sells parts and kits, if you have a local builder that knows these transmissions well he can put the parts together and build what is needed. Building a good 48RE is much simpler than the 6 speeds so you can find help other than a chain or specific builder.
Do yourself a favor and DO NOT go with an ats unit.
Unless you like being broke down and having warranty work done on it every six months through the life of the warranty like I had to.
Three full units...
10 converters...
10 valve bodies...
Over the life of the warranty.
Where are you located? I would find a reputable builder that is closest to you.
Thanks guys for the helpful replies. i have a transmission guy that i go to in Newport that does good work and he has worked on several built transmissions and I'm sure he could get whatever i wanted and do it just i didn't know what brand would be the best so i wanted to get a few people that have experienced some of the good and bad companies and get some ideas of which i should start looking into a lot more.
I have decided to build my transmissions myself in the garage. I'll have the 48re in my '07 of course, I'll at some point swap my '03 manual to 48re, and likely my '84 crew cab gets a 47/48-based trans as well.
Going to get a fancy trans table as well, you know the one with the drain and raised edges. Just because it's something else I get to buy.
My parts on the shelf will be sourced direct from Goerend. It's no coincidence, I feel, that ALL my transmission issues suddenly vanished when I got Goerend stuff. Went from HATING the transmission and thinking about trading it for a manual, to knowing I'll likely never own another diesel pickup with a manual. Yep, it made that much of a difference.
Just make sure you get quality parts and competent hands to put them together.
I am feeling the same way about my power driven unit vurses the Ats unit I've been fighting for the past 5 years.
What a difference! it shifts firm yet smooth as butter and I can actually feel it putting the power down and holding it.
If you have a GOOD local builder I would use him and quality parts which goerend is.
