well i think im goin to flush the whole system and put in a lower thermostat if i can find one, if not ill just put a 190 back in and go from there. i know the fluctuation of the temperatures cant be right, im reading a thread right now in the 98.5-02 sec. that suggest that air could be in the system causing the thermostat to open and close late. also mentioned to check the head gasket for leaks as it may be letting air in also.

? do you know what the temps actually are. I ask because you are putting a lot a faith in that guage. Try the old meat themometer(sp?) trick before you get to tearing into the engine. It sounds like everthing is working right, it is opening up closing off and opening up again just that the guage actually reads high.

I have a 03 and mine runs 195 to 205. Shouldnt these trucks run in that area for a good burn? Its been 100+ the last 2 weeks here in Texas. I feel pretty comfortable running 200 temp. Any thoughts? Anybody else running 200+-?

My '06 has been doing that since brand new! From cold it will go above 200 about 1-2 needle widths and then settle back down once the thermostat opens up. It usually runs right around 200 plus or minus 2 needle widths. I now have 103K miles on it. This weekend I flushed and refilled my coolant system and the coolant came out virgin clean after 103K miles. No oil, no scale, no dirt, just clean coolant. Some things that I have learned over the years.....Use the manufacturers suggested thermostat rating, don't second guess them. Use good quality specified coolant at the proper mix rate with distilled water, keep the radiator fins clean, and drive it and smile. BTW, I have read a LOT of threads that say not to use any other thermostat then the one supplied by Cummins. After market versions seem to have issues in our engines. Oh and here is a little trick if you are gonna flush your cooling system. When I went to refill the system it did not want to take more than 1.5 gallons. I removed the heater core hose where it comes out of the head and the venting allowed me to put 5 gallons back in, which is what came out when I drain it the first time.
