Pyrometer Location
Hey guys I often see pictures of another persons truck and you can see their pyrometer probe in the top of the manifold forward of the outlet. According to the installation sheets that came with my gauges it should be in the rearward part of the outlet. Just curious if it will make a difference in the reading or what the theory is behind the different location.

I have mine in the rear portion of the manifold, because the rear 3 cylinders will prouce the most heat.... I have heard that the front pyro position can result in a 200-300 difference in EGT temps.

Yup, mines in the rear portion of the exhaust. I've heard #6 runs the hottest, although my ADR instructions do say to mount at the front.

recieve the most fresh air. But who knows. Quote:
FWIW, I've had my temps up to 1300 for about 5 seconds--- no problems, but didn't want to stay there long.

Mines in the rear but once it gets close i back off, so even the 300 degrees wouldnt really matter once it gets close you back off and cool down. but as said the rear gets the hottest

someone today told me that EGT gauges aren't very accurate, that whatever the gauge reads i need to add 200-300 degrees to get my real temp. Is this true, or anyone heard of this??

whoever it was probably just forgot to include the deciding information. a post turbo egt probe will read 200-300 degrees cooler than the actual exhaust gas temperature leaving the head. the turbo absorbs quite a bit of heat, around 200-300 degrees immediately, probably more if given enough time. remember that turbo gas engines egt @ 1500 degrees plus for the entire length of a run. our diesels probably can handle more than the 1400 deg safe limit, but that is our buffer for the possible 10-25% difference between gauge and actual.
