2003 vs 2005 cummins manual... Differences? One better?

hey guys I have 2 trucks that I am looking at... a 2003 and a 2005 cummins manual. there is about a 3500 price difference for the newer one...

Im curious is the 2005 a lot better or faster? or does it have a better transmission or turbo? more reliable? is the 2005 easier to make faster? I've heard the 2003 will get better mileage? is that true is it a lot better? I want to know if it is worth spending more money...

if they are about the same I will probably go with the 2003 to save money... the trucks are basically identical.

Do u know what engine is in the 03? There were 2 diesels offered that year. The SO had 250 hp and the HO had 305. If it's an HO I would buy the 2003. I had an 05 that I liked very much, but I believe the 03 models didnt have the third injection event and got better mileage.

im no 3rd gen guru but i can help to answer some of your questions, others chime in and correct me if im wrong here.

the 2005 will have a little more power stock compared to the 2003. the 2005 will have 325 and the 2003 will have 305.

the 2005 will be easier to make power initially, but the 2005 will eventually hit a wall when it comes to building power because the 3rd injection event gets in the way, and the 2003 will not hit that wall.

the 2003 will get better mileage because it only has 2 injection events per powerstroke and the 2005 has 3, in turn using more fuel. (not a major difference in fuel mileage) the 2003 also has an 8 hole injector compared to the 5 hole injector in the 2005.

the 2003 will have a smaller turbo (he341) the 2005 will have the better turbo (he351)

im not positive on this but i think the 2003 will have the nv5600 and the 2005 will have the g56. i hear the nv5600 is the better one?

if i had the choice i would probably get the 2003, but really its a toss up. both will be great trucks and leave you satisfied. just make sure to add better fuel filtration as soon as you get it to help prevent injector bodies from wearing out.

hope this helped a little.
good luck

I had a 2005 that I absolutely loved and it was bone stock! people have different opinions but like 6 says the 03 will be a better build but the 05 has more stock horsepower. . I like the g56 trans personally because reverse is hidden! nobody can drive it if they don't know anything about it. . But both trucks will be everything you want and more same outer make-up just a few mechanical differences . . All depends on what YOU want!

This pretty much sums it up. 6 speed was only available behind the HO (305/555) in 03. Theres a possibility the 05 has an NV. Reverse all the way right and up is NV, to the left and down is G.

Only available with NV4500 5 speed. Cali/SO were 5, HO 6spd

NV5600's were made up to 05 and the 05.5 was when the G56 was introduced. The G56 will hold less power and parts seem to let go alot sooner on them while the NV5600 will hold up a bit longer. The G56 has smoother shifts vs the NV5600. Now on the motors the 05 will make alot more power with just a programmer, intake and exhaust while the 03-04 take a little more work with stacking various programmers then the lift pump issue with the 03-05 have block mounted pumps versus the tank pump in the 05.5's. If it were me again I'd go with 03 just b/c they can take bigger nozzles and seem to make more power if your goin all out with a build. But just driving with programer, intake and exhaust go 05. Just my .02
