Garrett GT3782R for Towing

Alright, this is a question for you guys that know a good towing turbo.

I have been eye balling the GT3782R for my 03 truck 6speed manual. I want one that keeps the egt's in check when towing over 18k at over 7000ft. elevations.

My stock just heats up to fast even on stock settings. The he341 is not doing my 5.9 any justice.

Any insights on this turbo would be appreciated.

I have the stage 2 on my truck and really like it. It spools about the same as the stock he351 and cools a bit better. I would think egt's will be much better than your he341 is now, possibly 200 to 300 degrees cooler would be my guess if you don't lug it. With the 6 speed you can choose any gear to keep the rpm's where they need to be. Overall I really like this turbo, and think it would be a really good choice. I got mine from Tom at turbo resource, he was great to deal with.

That is good to know. I was looking at a GT3788R but not sure if that would work well for towing if I have not changed my Cam yet.

I wonder if the spool aid that I have put in will help with a larger turbo but after talking with Tom, he explained that its about how the engine uses all that air is the real cause of surging and not that it does not get enough. The Cam will allow the engine to use the more air flow so it doesn't back up the turbo so that made me kinda question the GT3788R, especially at my elevation with stock Cam.

Save some money and throw a 04.5-07 he351 turbo on there.

Yeah I have been thinking about that also but I dont think it will flow enough air to keep egt's down as my air here is very thin and I need more air flow. This is the reason for a little larger turbo.

Why not take a look at a silver62, if i 'm not mistaken its similar in flow to the GT3782R.

I have thought about that but at the same price for the silver I feel better with the added features that Garrett offers on both its water cooling, ball bearing fast spool and room to go towards a Stage 3 later on.

I really like singles, but at your altitude and wieght of about 26000lbs surely your better off with twins.

On side note, how's the spool aid with the 341?

Twins would be nice but the cost of just the piping and then turbos? It is expensive for just the piping alone. I wish though..

That spool aid spins my 341 ridiculously fast when compared to before. My egt's have cooled about 200 degrees and it has a very fast drop when I let out of the skinny pedal. I hit about 35psi instantly as before it would only get up to about 30psi.

This is part of the reason why I am looking to upgrade but just trying to find the right setup.

Id bet the he351 flows just as much as the GT3782R, I seriously doubt you'd see a difference between the two, that little garrett isnt hardly an "upgrade", but if you set on the Garrett go with the stage 3 and the smaller exhaust housing.

One thing with the he351 you can buy a used one for 350-400 bucks, and if it doesnt work for you and you need more air, you can sell it for either no loss or around $50.

Not even close to the same turbo, and that one would be terrible for what he wants.

I wanted the stage 3 but worried about surging. So do you know the air flow and map range of a 351 verses a 3782? I thought the 3782 was a 63/72/14 size equivalent while the 351 is a 60/60/9. Correct me if I am wrong.
