Ok so I've read through the "basic mods" thread in the sticky... But I still need a little help with making the specific choices. So here goes...
I'm in the market for new injectors. I'm not sure if I want 60s or 90s. I'm already addressing the filtration issue on the '07 with a kit from dieselfuelfilterkits.com and possibly a GDP Fuel Boss.
The question comes in the form of SHOULD I upgrade the turbo? If so... What??? There are SOOOO many options to choose from.
Also I already have EFILive in the works so I'm covered there...
I do know that 60hp sticks will work with the stock HE351... But I'm going to eventually go bigger... So should I just bite the bullet and grab an S363 setup and go with 90hp sticks?....
Maybe some suggestions on injectors as well... I'm looking at exergy but I'm not too sure on which way I'll actually fall... So any ideas there would be helpful as well.
Again, thanks to everyone in advance. I know there's a lot of smart people on here.
Don't buy into the hype of "Exergy is the best". You can get the same quality or better from other vendors on here and for a better price. Ducky fuel injection, S&S, BMS, and DAP to name a few. As far as turbos go, that will depend on your power goals and usage goals.
I have been reading quite a bit about the injectors and I do agree about exergy. I haven't looked into any that you mention so... Of to google I go...
As far as power goals... At the current moment I'd just like to see about 450-500. Nothing crazy just yet. My truck is my DD/family wagon so I don't want to go full tilt just yet. But I'd like to have room to expand. The S363 seems like I'll get decent spooling and not be too much for what I'm looking for right now. But again... I don't have too much experience in upgrading the power parts. Most of my experience lies in the "non-powertrain" areas and stock rebuilds.
On another note... I've seen some hatred towards II... What's the deal there? I was all about Industrial Injection until I saw a few thread comments about them being trash....
I checked out all the suggestions you posted. I'm definitely a lot happier with the pricing and not to mention most of them are very specific about being 100% new. Only issue I'm running into now is that I'm starting to lean towards 100HP sticks... But I know that will definitely require more air. Which means a definite turbo upgrade. Which also means a possible fueling upgrade as well... But I'd like to stick the the stock LP for as long as possible... IF that's possible....
Before you start jumping on sticks on and chargers. What tranny do you have and have you upgraded it to handle more power? If it says in your sig i can't see since I'm on my two way mobile telecommunication device.
Ok, sounds like your all over the place. Alot gose into upgrading properly and alot depends on your power goals as a whole. In the diesel world things get real expensive so the last thing you want to do is upgrade 2 or 3 times. Size of injectors will vary, again depending on you power goals. For example, if you want 500ish now but plan on 700 in the future. Then go with a set of 100s or even 120s. Remember with custom tuning, the injectors can be dialed back. This will allow you room to grow down the road. 450hp is possible on a stock charger with custom tuning. You need to consider a set of head studs, valve springs, and rods as well. Another issue here is your stock transmission can't handle your power goals for long so, keep that in mind also.
I agree with 05Powerhouse. Just a custom tune will put you up in the 450-500hp range, but on a stock trans you're gonna be driving through the TC. As far as turbo and sticks, a bigger single is gonna require more fuel to spool it. 60 hp sticks most likely won't be enough. Gotta match the air to fuel and like mentioned above, a custom tune can dial back bigger sticks until you get the air to match it. Headstuds, valve springs, and rods are always a good piece of mind. I'm running the 100hp Exergy sticks on my setup with a bigger single but still have room to throw some more fuel at it. An 85% over cp3 is in the near future. See how one thing leads to another? Once you open that door and take a trip down heroin diesel road, there is no turning back lol. IMO I would start with a good custom tune and get your tranny beefed up and see how you like it. That may be all the power you're looking for. Doesn't take much to get to that 450-500hp range.
Ok guys I'm gonna go ahead and apologize upfront. I should have been more clear from the get.
05PowerHouse hit it on the head. I'm going for 500ish now and setting myself up for somewhere around 700 later down the road.
To answer Grunt11B I have a G56 with a stock clutch and a SB DD sitting in my living room waiting for these upgrades. Also, from a former 11B, thanks for your service my friend!
Now back to it... I know I sounded all over the place. Sometimes my brain works faster than I can make sense of. So with that said... I'm thinking 100HP sticks because I'm getting EFILive and YES, Texas_Roper, I know I can dial down the sticks until I really start getting at it.
Rods, valve springs and studs are on the list next. As well as a 10mm stroker pump. I was bit by the HP Bug a long long time ago when I was racing fox body mustangs. I've been working on diesels since I could walk so I have a good idea of what I NEED to do... Just trying to fine tune my knowledge before I start down the road of no return.
I hope I've cleared things up a bit and again, I apologize for not being quite clear enough from the get.

Your mods list looks good. The 100 HP injectors, 10mm pump, springs and rods will be great for 700 HP down the road. Now you gotta figure out air. You can throw the 363 on there now and use it as a secondary later on down the road for compounds for your goal. But if you just wanna run a single, then just get a bigger turbo now and not get the s363. Iirc you can get 700 HP out of a s364.
Grunt11B if I wanted to stay with a single I would do the S364 but eventually I'm looking at twins. At least that's the plan right now. It could always change, but I'm gonna stick with the twin upgrade for now as my long term outlook.
Oh one other thing I'm looking at is a mech fuel pump... I've only seen the DTT Assassin and GDP Fuel Boss as options. Now this will be on that second list of studs springs and rods. But I'll be needing the enhanced fueling sooner rather than later and I'm not too sure if there are any other options out there. Guess it's not a huge deal ATM but would like to have a solid build list...
Just for those interested in exactly what I'm looking at as far as a list so you can certainly comment and maybe clear up anything... Here goes...
Dieselfuelfilterkits.com dual kit
S&S 45% over injectors
GDP Big Line Kit
Stainless Diesel 2G swap kit with a S363 63/68/.88 T-4 (a precursor to eventual twins)
EFILive (tuned for smaller fuel supply)
Directly after I get this going I'll be getting studs, springs, rods, a mech fuel pump, and either an S&S 10mm stroker pump or a dual fueled setup.
Thoughts, concerns, gripes, complaints, or nasty comments are more than welcome!!!!
It looks good to me. If you got a fass or air dog, that will cover 3 of your items. The filter kit, big line kit and mechanical fuel pump. But if a mechanical pump is what you prefer over an eclectic one, then your list is solid.
Also i don't know if you have plans for any gauges, but if you do, i would look into the edge insight CTS 2. To go a long with that, i would monitor oil pressure along with other things since the oil pressure gauge in our trucks are not real gauges.
As far as a FASS or AD, I'd like to stay away from the electric pumps just for ease of maintaining. If I break a belt... Easy enough to change out and cheap... If a motor goes down.. More $$ and a little harder to change on the side of the road. Plus the mech LP will keep my stock LP in place as a back up. Once I start getting towards the 700 mark I'll start looking at FASS or AD. It's going to be quite some time before I really start going towards 700 so MY PERSONAL OPINION is that a mech fuel pump is a little more my style. I would love an AD 4G 165 but I don't think I'll be needing that heavy of fueling just yet.
As far as gauges... They're DEFINITELY on the list. Yes I am VERY aware that the dash "gauges" aren't gauges. I'm putting together a gauge setup as I type this. I'm going to be putting in the absolutely necessary gauges as usual (pyro, boost, rail, fuel press.) but I'm also looking at drive pressure, oil pressure and probably one or two others. Not to sure just yet on the others, but those 6 that I listed are the "for sure" gauges I want. I've thought about the CTS2, but I like the look of "old fashion" gauges. Just something about having them all ticking away bright as fudge all up in your face that just makes me want to go faster HAHA. I guess that's still left over from my racing days... It's a little more expensive to go with the analog gauges as a whole but everyone has their personal preferences and no one can bash on that.
I must say, I really appreciate the comments and suggestions my friend. I'll be starting to order parts next week. I'm excited, it'll finally be time to start building the beast after 7 looooong years of ownership!!!
Have to let me know how those S&S injectors turn out. I'm in the market and the options of injectors is mind boggling. I was looking at S&S, BBi, and BMS no clue which way to go.
I saw the edge CTS2 mentioned in here, is that just gauges or is it a tuner? How do you get your EFIlive tunes? Just wondering since I will be doing a similar build shortly and am clueless as to how this all comes together.
I'm thinking of going back to the BMS sticks cuz even with the discount from Stainless diesel they S&S sticks are still 400 more than the BMS. The 3 companies (S&S, BBi and BMS) are all really similar in build and quality. I don't think you'll go wrong with any of them. DO NOT GET REMANUFACTURED INJECTORS!!! There are reman options but I PERSONALLY will never put a reman in my truck especially now that I'm about to put some umph in the truck. You can't put a price on piece of mind.
As far as the CTS2... It is NOT a tuner. It holds no tuning capabilities. It's a "monitoring system" if you will. That said... Edge has the juice w/ attitude tuner that you can get with it but EFILive I think is the way to go with the 06+ trucks... Not to mention the edge combo is about the same $ as a total EFILive package but doesn't have custom tuning available. It's all up to you and this is just my .02
EFILive tunes are preloaded on the uploader then you can do updates to the tunes through email after doing testing. Pretty slick if you ask me... But I'm not a technologically savvy guy. So to me it's bada$$.
Oh ok sweet thanks for clearing that up. Won't be getting that then. EFIlive has the custom tuning though?
I won't be getting reman anything, but I want new. I want to see if they have a warranty on their injectors. I don't want to pay all of that money and have an injector break 100 miles in.
I can't really say anything about warranty but if an injector goes down that fast... Oh I would certainly hope that I can get a new one for FREE hahaha. EFILive does a "cookie cutter" tune based on the info you give them when you order. Then, once you load it up, you can do some data logging and a dyno run to see what's going on and if you're getting everything out of the tune. And THAT part is all done over email. The EFILive I'm looking at through PPEI can doing scanning and data logging, BUT I am not putting on a CP3 just yet so I'm going to stick with the tune they send based off the info I give them. Then once my fuel system is completely done up I'll data log and then get with them about setting up the tune for what I've got going on.
On another note... Make sure you address your fuel filtration prior to or at the same time as you install your injectors. That way you have nice and clean fuel flowin through your BRAND NEW injectors. Bosch says 2microns filtration and there are a lot of options out there for that. FASS mad Air Dog can put that filtration and a better lift pump all in one package. So that's a definite thing to start looking at.
As one guy already mentioned in this thread... When you do one thing you'll have to do another quite soon after if not at the same time. So be prepared!!! It gets expensive QUICK.
I was planning on getting a FASS95, I don't ever plan on going over 400-500hp. I will just run new lines as well so if the FASS goes out I can just hook the old fuel setup back in. I will be buying it all at the same time. Engine and Trans upgrades about 10k worth of stuff. Just wondering about the tunes. I will more than likely go with EFIlive since everyone seems happy with them. I wouldn't think I need a new CP3, but if it needs to be replaced I will just use a new bosch one I guess.
ive heard that the stock cp3 is decent up to around 500hp but having a bigger cp3 I don't think would hurt. If you get into the throttle and you get up to higher rpms the stocker might start to choke the system. That's where rail pressure and fuel pressure gauges come in real handy. Yes, data logging will show you if your have rail pressure issues but not until you get done. A rail gauge will show you in the cab. A good NEW modified CP3 will run a pretty penny, but if you're seeing a drop in rail pressure then a CP3 is a necessity. You won't be getting enough fuel. Something to think about. I'm not doing a cp3 upgrade just yet myself, but my tune will reflect that. That's what's nice (I think) about EFILive. The other tuners just assume you have the proper mods and start yelling for more fuel but the CP3 can't keep up... Bad news there...
That's better than getting a FASS or Airdog? OP I read through some other threads about the rattle of the BMS injectors. Is that a spray pattern/nozzle thing or something wrong in the injector? Trying to make sure I can get a good reliable set of injectors. Sorry for the rookie questions. First injector purchase, my previous 7.3 never needed injectors.
Injector selection will be tough. No matter what. This is my first set of performance injectors. Not my first set but first performance set. I've done research over the last year about what injectors to get. As far as the rattle I can't say anything from experience but I have read a couple threads a while back about it. The thing I've noticed though is that CR injectors for 03/04 trucks have a 143* spray pattern IIRC and our trucks 04.5-07 run 124*. Now that could be the cause... Maybe... But I haven't looked into it too much. Could be a bad injector or spray pattern or possibly the fuel (filtration, air in the lines, or what have you) what I do know is this... MOST brand new injectors start off as Bosch stockers... Then each company does their particular thing and viola... Performance injector. I know that's a crude definition but what I'm getting at is that they all start the same... Again this will be my first performance set so I can't give you any advice other than keep reading haha.
On that note... I have gone back to the S&S injectors. I'm getting a sweet deal from Jonny at Stainless Diesel on the injectors, my S363 2nd Gen swap kit and a 10mm stroker pump so as soon as I get them installed and run I'll let you know either by PM or I'm thinking of putting up a build thread. I also decided to go to oth an AirDog 2 165 instead of the mech fuel pump for simplicity and financial reasons... For now lol....
Do a build thread vs Pm. Then everyone can see and it can help others out vs just one person.
This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread.
