Hey everyone. New to the forum and have some questions. I'll start with my first and I apologize if it's already been covered on here... I have seen tones of people with 3rd Gens that have put 2nd Gen turbos/manifolds on.. My question is why? Would you not need a new intake, longer down pipe, and maybe new oil feed and return lines? And where the turbo bolts to the manifold on a 3rd gen it's 90 degrees from the head where as a 2nd gen it's 45 degrees from the head, also it's in the middle of the manifold instead of the back like on a 3rd gen manifold.. So would the turbo not interfere with the shock tower and or the engine mount? Thanks in advance!!
Man if you ever had it you would love it. It just breathes so much better sounds good and coming from a built 2nd gen I just had to do it. Maid old oil return and supply line 2nd gen style down pipe charge pipe and a turbo. Intake is just a piece of 45 degree angle pipe and you out a filter on it. Simple stuff makes working on the turbo taking it on and off way easier because a it's not in a hole anymore like the 3rd gen style
lots of reasons why. First most say it sounds better. Second you get in theory better exhaust pulses to spool the turbo. Third the second gen design is generally less restrictive. Forth it sets the stage for compounds later, though compounds can be done on a third gen manifold but piping is more complex. and fifth it looks cool!
Yes you need a new down pipe, and mods to the intercooler pipe as well as air intake. I think some people use the oil feed and return. Motor mount and shock tower should be a non issue. Is it a must do upgrade? Nope lots of people making great power on a third gen design and better (read less restriction) manifolds in the third gen design are available.
I'll be another to say how great it is. It makes pulling the turbo off the most simple task ever especially when flipped up in a twin position like stainless diesel's kit has to offer.
Lol @ achmeds location.. But spot on accurate for this discussion.
And that sound... Truck just sounds angry, even at an idle.
I went with the 2nd gen swap because I don't think my turbo would of fit with a spacer and a different down pipe. I got the manifold a while ago and waited till I could afford everything else.
They're a great kit to piece together as you go too like you stated. That's basically what I did and installed it all once I had my larger turbo. Plus now switching to compounds their kits are designed off of the 2nd gen swap kit and allow you to expand easily. Just specify what you want and Johnny will build it.
yea I just put s467 on stainless's 2nd gen kit and when you open the hood that's the first thing you see cause it sits up so high, and closer to the cab so it sounds like a wind mill under your hood lol and sounds killer with the 2nd gen mani when you get into higher rpms:grin2:
Not to hijack here, but for those of you who have responded here's my situation/question. I have an 07 stock for the most part other than efi live, and I recently bought a stock 2nd gen mani from a member on the classifieds here. My intention is to pick up a turbo from Tater, or buy an Aurora5000 off a friend who's going bigger, and install at same time as mani. So here's my question. Mani is clean, but rusty, so I planned on blasting and painting it. I don't know enough about them to know if a stock mani is going to give comparable sound/performance to the aftermarket manis, and I'm just wasting money and time going with this one, or is it going to be a good longer term fix that I won't be looking to replace shortly down the road?
I bought a stock one. $75 from a member on this forum. Just wondering I guess if the stock 2nd gen will give the sound effect you'd get from aftermarket stainless, ats, etc. I'm sure their manifolds probably offer better flow and such as you'd expect out of an aftermarket performance product, but I'm not looking to be in the 800+hp range. So was kinda under the assumption a stock 2nd gen would probably suit my needs
Thanks for the info everyone! I can get my hands on a 2nd Gen manifold for cheap, would I be able to mount my stock turbo onto the 3rd gen manfold? Also.. What is T3/T4? And is there a site that I can get the intercoler let pipe kit to go to a second gen manifold? Preferred in Canada..
I'll most likely be putting my intake and piping to the innercooler up for sale off of my 2nd gen kit for my single turbo. It's stainless diesel. Pm me if someone needs it
Just a straight swap and nothing else, no. It would be a convenience change for easier access to the turbo plus a sound upgrade. Most will make the change with a turbo upgrade or compounds so depending on what you do along with it, it can help with a lot.
So just to confirm.. To do the swap I would need 1) 2nd Gen manifold obviously.. 2) New downpipe.. 3) New intercooler piping.. 4) New intake... That should be all correct? And I would mount the 2nd gen manfold upside down so the part where the turbo mounts to is facing more towards the hood rather than the frame? Thanks in advance!
Yup that's it. Maybe longer oil lines too for the turbo.
And depending on what turbo you mount up you may need the 1" spacer plate between the turbo and manifold. SD sells them as well.
Definitely going to need a longer drain line or extension and most likely the feed as well. Also if you have the manifold flipped upward, a regular 2nd gen downpipe wont work. The only company that makes a downpipe for the up position is stainless to my knowledge.
Unless you have good fabrication skills and all the equipment at your disposable, I'd recommend just buying the stainless piping kit. I got it from cpp during a sale (like this weekend...) and it was only a bit above $600. Doing everything yourself including the filter, piping, lines all that crap you might save a couple hundred dollars but then be haggling with it to get it to fit right. Worth the extra couple hundred to me to not have to waste my time messing with stuff.
The truth Period.....Really??? Maybe some 3rd gen guys like the trucks to sound like real inline 6cyl diesel engines....and not sound like Bigfoot farting in the bathroom at Taco Bell.
There's also the part where you can't fit an s400 with a race cover in the 3rd gen location, but that doesn't really matter quite so much to the third gen guys who often just run s300's.
The stock manifold sounds like dog crap. Just the difference in sound alone was worth it.
