I think it would be nice if a rep from Mads would chime in. I read the instructions and have taken the position that the default settings are just fine because like everyone else I think the instructions are too confusing. It would also be nice if we understood exactly what the settings do. Tell us in real world language. Example: More timing decreases power and lowers egts. Or whatever it does.

version 5.10- timing 4, torque 2

This is the most powerful and responsive settings for each version. This is also the most powerful settings for each power level. It is important to note, however, if you have ever had version 5.08 and updated to another version some people (myself included) have found that the truck must be set back to stock and then reprogrammed for the torque management to be "fixed".

Well there you go then. That explains my response of 4 and 4. I have version 5.08......

I knew those settings felt the strongest.

I have another question though, I saw there was an update available, 5.10 and I have 5.09. So should I update every time there is a new version or what?

It depends. When you see and update read the reason for the update. 5.10 is for a compatibility issue and has nothing to do with you or I.

Bob has chimed in many times in the past and there are many threads with very informative dialog along with some dyno results. The problem is there is a new thread like this every other day on several forums and Bob is a very busy man. If you will take the information that I gave and combine it with the Mads instructions and do some experimentation you will find the conglomeration very accurate.

Hope this helps ! If not I'll be glad to try and answer any questions that anyone has.

Do you know the specific posts that will help? I would like to see them, especially the ones with dyno #'s. I would like to compare my mods and see if I can come up with approx #'s. I looked and I have the 5.8. Do I need to update? If so I assume the update is found at the Mads page. I would also like to figure out why my egt's are higher than most. Especially since I am running a larger turbo.

What is the download site again? I have the very basic version, no timing options. Will the 5.6 allow me to tune in even more timing?

This question on the smarty is what I`ve been looking for too. I have the quad 65hp towing box now. Is the smarty worth the extra $? Is there really a big advantage over other brands?

I think so. The torque management/timing adjustability is priceless IMO and greatly improves drivability. The smarty offers lower EGTs than anyone else via dynamic timing which you cannot get from a chip. The POD function is the only one on the market that gives total control over the entire power output. Jr does not increase rail pressure which is very detrimental to injector longevity.

Thanks HOD-ISB. What about smoke? I don`t like my every day work truck to smoke any more than it has to.

With all the adjustability smoke reduction is fairly easy if you don't mind sacrificing a little performance. I don't care for much smoke either cause all it does is soot load the oil.

Timing #4, TM #2, 100hp setting. Version 5.10

18mpg avg in town
21mpg avg highway

Decent power and almost no smoke whatsoever, TC and VB soon to follow should make this a reliable DD.

Question: Will this setting be good for towing 4-5k
