programmers-how do they work?

It is my understanding that modules/programmers either alter the pressure, timing or duration or a combination of each. Is there anything else they do to increase performance?

what more can you do?
In reality there are a limited number of ways to increase HP in a diesel.

1. increase the fuel pressure, thus more fuel enters the chamber in the short time the injectors open.

2. Increase the duration. Increase the time the injector flows fuel into the chamber.

3. Change the timing. Alter where during the stroke the fuel is added. By adjusting timing you can increase mileage by injecting the fuel sooner. This increases cylinder pressure, gives a more complete burn in the chamber, decrease EGT's, but will increase turbo lag.
By retarding the timing, EGT's go up, cylinder pressures go down, Turbo lag decreases and more fuel is consumed.

The main trick would be to find the best combination of the three to accomplish whatever goals you have.

Some programmers also control the electronic wastegate, and will allow you to run a little more boost to allow the use of the extra fuel. However more boost does not always produce more power, because once the turbo gets outside its efficiency range, the usefulness of the air is decreased.

Is that what you were looking for?

Nice explanation Twoforme2..........I think I'll even put a sticky on this.
That's a good explanation for people who are just starting out in the world of "diesel bombing".

Since this is sticky, maybe we could get a comprehensive list of the capabilities of all the programmers and chips/modules on the market? There are so many pucks, boxes, chips, monitors, programmers, etc etc etc that people can get easily confused. Then when you are considering a stack, you might end up with incompatible parts, or just parts that repeat the same adjustments!
If we could make a list of what each one does, what sensors it intercepts, and i'm sure there's more (it's like 3 am, I'm not fully clear right now ) I think we'd have a hit info source... It seems like guys here have a better knowledge of these performance parts than the companies that make them, at least what info they publicize.
For instance, I'm trying to figure out if I need a boost fooler in conjunction with my TST cr49 if I turn off the boost defueling setting on it? (if I upgrade the turbo)...

Mods, think we can change this all around?

That's exactly what this place needs. I've spent hours researching on here with little posting - because I seem to ask the same questions and get the same answers...."just go buy a smarty" Well, I did - and it doesn't seem to work any better that what I've already tried. I'd say 80% of us on here are looking to spend $1500 total in performance parts while the other 20% have a money tree and are looking for 10's in the quarter mile with a 4 ton truck.

Obviously there are some guys on here that have earned their respect with knowledge. So why can't we "sticky" their findings at the top of the page so we don't have every tom, dick, and harry Newbie coming in here posting, "which tuner" for the 87th time this week.

I'd like to know what level 3 does on my edge juice/attitude - and have people stacked it with a timing tune on the smarty?

I think it would be great if the performance parts discussion was split down to some more sub catagories.

1) Tuners
a) tuners only
b) stacks
2) intakes
3) exhaust
4) turbos
and so on........

There's just too much info to weed through. If I look up smarty, I get a hundred threads just talking about it's the holy grail of tuners, and nothing about what it actually does. I had no idea the used smarty I got was "old" and needed updated until I talked with a GURU on the phone.

I'd like to see what kind of timing each one of these things add, and some form of calculating how much fuel each one adds. Whether it be 10% more fueling, or whatever.

Its been years since I knew how a diesel was timed, and even at that - these new engines I'm sure are totally different.

What is stock timing ?* degrees BTDC? ATDC? what does the smarty add on it's levels?
What timing is dangerous?

somewhere there is a list of programers that shows a side by side of what each individual programer alters. it was made for when stacking you wont have 2 programers trying to perform the same duties. ill try and find it and post it up

not enough info anyways. I would like to know what kind of timing each throws down.
