I recognized this when I made the decision to purchase our '07 in '08. Gut or excise the cat, put a cam in it and you have the best possible combination of Dodge-Cummins on the road, bar none, even the '98 12V's.

Guys have posted their before/after cat/no cat dyno results. With the cat they lost 2-4 hp/400 hp made. It flows well.

Maybe a new one. Wonder how much HP they make after it starts clogging up or the truck goes into limp mode after throwing a cat-related CEL?

There on no sensors post cat on a 5.9 at least. So there is no way for the ECU to know anything is different.

So you don't think the cat can affect anything upstream?

There really are no OEM sensors at all on the hot side of the motor so no I don't think there would be any way for the ECU to notice a cat issue.

Well thankfully we don't smog here yet…YET lol. Wisconsin diesels are emission except 07.5 and older depending on county. But I think smog and CARB will be nationwide some day and that's going to be big headaches for modified trucks...

Where did you get that quote? LOL

What county are you in? Dane County has no emissions yet for any passenger vehicles(any years) despite being strongly lefty, progressive, etc... I'm happy with this because I'd have a tough time passing anything. I have 2 soft codes from fan clutch delete. Cat is deleted and no mufflers so clearly fail a visual. Smokes like a train on a snap test. Would also fail visual under the hood. Grid heater deleted, big shiny turbo and manifold, etc... Seriously FML if we ever get mandated emissions. Oh and I had to disconnect the rear diff abs sensor so I'd fail a safety inspection too.

Oh man lol I meant to write emission exempt prior to 07.5 hahah. Yea I think the majority of us diesel heads would be screwed majorly. I live in racine county (emission cty) but when I had my 6.7 I had to register it at a buddies in walworth county lol (non emission cty). I think right now Racine, Walworth, Kenosha, and milwaukee counties are the only ones that require emissions in wisconsin.

The cat is a non-factor on the 04.5-07 trucks, they don't sap power, they are the bare minimum in emissions, in fact I don't even count them as an "emissions device" because they just don't matter.

The "Holy Grail" in truck terms means the last of the best, thus the best cab for 2nd gens with the last of the 12v. The 07 5.9 is the last of the 5.9...an 03 isn't a "Holy Grail", nor is an 05, or an 06. And if you want to go with the 98 with the best cab, like razo said, an 07 5.9 Mega is top dog.

Grail status comes with the last of the best...the 5.9 served us well for 19 years in various forms. Key word: LAST. The last 12v. The last 5.9. Model years 1998 and 2007, no others can claim that status. Period.

Have you ever seen one off a truck and actually looked inside it?

the 2gen "holy grail" got it's status via the 12 valve and the new interior.

In regards to the cats I've read a few posts that guys were having problems passing smog on stock trucks because they were missing cats that were never there. CA is so anal it's unreal. I wouldn't be surprised if they mandated non-emission trucks to install aftermarket DPF's. Actually if my memory serves me correctly they did that once until it burned a large portion of a national forest…??
