What is the root of this A/C problem?

Started the truck one day and the a/c wasn't cold, the charge was good, but i noticed that the compressor would kick on and off every few seconds constantly and it made the truck run jumpy when I held it at a constant throttle from the load/ unload on the engine. Also after I played with the A/C button awhile it started blowing cold. Anytime it starts blowing hot I mess with the button and it goes cold. but once again as soon as I turn the A/C on the compressor kicks on and off constantly. I was told that the switch to replace was around $400? Anyone know the name of the switch or other causes, truck has 105k on it. had a whole knew A/C put it at 66k under warrenty.
Thanks

it sounds like it may just be that switch if you fiddle with it and get the ac to work. could prolly find em in the classifieds on here for cheaper. also, maybe check the wires (and harness) at and around the compressor; they sometimes rub a bare spot on/in the wires.

Check the wiring harness at the bottom drivers side of the shroud, it runs up between the fan and the radiator. it controls the fan clutch when you are running your AC at an idle. Its pretty common for the fan to cut it, I just had to repair mine. Does the AC blow cold when you are driving?

After I press the snow flake button a few times, it gets cold and stays cold, but the compressor constantly kicks on and off, I'm worried if it isn't fixed soon I'll be replacing a compressor clutch

Refrigerant pressure transducer is the high/low pressure switch on the system that monitors the system pressure and can engage/disengage the clutch for various reasons.

First you need to put a set of guages on the system, high side and low side to determine what is going on and making the system cut in and out. Could be transducer, could be poor airflow, bad compressor, clogged oriface tube or something else.

check the voltage from the tipm on the plug at the back of the compressor (the coil plug). You can also check the resistance of the coil at the same plug. Mine is shot as well i traced it to being the coil gone bad since I only had 1.7 ohms of resistance. If the coil is trying to draw to much voltage the tipm will shut the system down only for the coil to try again. Hence the erratic on off sequence.

Much thanks to Hillbilli and some other folks on here for helping me figure it out.
