Talking Backup Camera Install

So I recently installed a backup camera on my 2003 2500. So far so good...

I'll try to get more details on the install later.

So is it attached to the tailgate?

Never thought of doing that before. I've been trying to figure out a backup cam setup but didn't want one of the lame licence plate mount ones.

Sure is. You can tell the camera is somewhat cut off on top, but I can see cars about 2 lengths behind me. You also can't see the camera while standing, you have to kneal down as it hides under the lip of the tailgate. I can drop my tailgate and it doesnt hit the camera. Now I am trying to think of a way to do extra reverse lights as you cant see in the dark. The camera I got is not night vision.

Forgot to mention, this costs me less than $50 and took me about an hour to install.

I guess the only problem with this method is when you want to take the tailgate off. And unfortunately I do that quite a bit.

For backup lights you can try the way I did mine:

I like that idea, and as for taking the tailgate off, there are 2 quick disconnects. Power and video. The video is simple RCA and power is like your laptop power plug. Very easy, but I never thought of that and don't remove my tailgate.

The display looks great. What is it? Did you get that as part of the $50.00. That would be amazing. Please let us know what these components are.

Thanks, Doug

I'm not sure where the OP got his set-up but I know you can get a pretty cheap deal on deal extreme website. It's in Hong Kong or China so it takes a while to arrive but it's decent stuff.

Install was so easy. I'll try to get more pictures of where I ran the wires and such.

The display was
3.5" TFT LCD 3.5" TFT LCD
$26

The camera was
Waterproof 170 degree backup camera Waterproof 170 degree backup camera
$23

Like I said, took me about an hour to run the wire and drill the holes for the mount of the camera and monitor. All in all, it went well and I am now working on some additional backup lights to give me better night vision.

Oh yeah, and my stuff was delivered in like 3 business days.

Nice install. I have been looking for this type of camera setup. I am not a fan of the license plate frame cameras. There are not many options out there for 3rd gen trucks. I wish they made a tailgate handle camera for 3rd gen trucks. Like the 4th gen's.

Does the video only come on when the truck is put in reverse, or does it constantly stay on? If it only comes on when the truck is put into reverse how'd you wire that?
