How loose should the steering shaft be?

Not so much the "twist" looseness of it as I understand there will be a little play, but more the "up and down" motion of it. Basically if I grab it and pull up and down on it it feels loose up towards the steering column. I have a rattle that comes through the steering wheel and I am thinking this may be the cause. I just want to make sure before I sink $250 into a new shaft.

Anyone?? Just looking to see how much play is in your steering shaft when you go out and try to wiggle it.

You should have 0 play in the steering shaft.
If there is any up and down did you check the bolts at the upper (steering box and steering column) and lower attachment points.
Loose?
How about the u-joint? any play?
If you do need a new shaft go to Genos Garage and for an extra $20 get a Borgeson.

Thanks for the reply. I have not checked the bolts yet. I wanted to get confirmation before ripping into it. I'll get to it and see where it goes.
