Nope. I thought the unitized bearings were basically garbage when they quit. Interested to see the writeup on this.

Yeah, I do remember a post on here where someone mentioned doing that.

Came across it here searching for help about the time I did my bearings.

Sorry, but I don't remember much else about it.

Technically, you can do what you are talking about to basically any "unit" bearing. You press the two halves apart and then start pressing out the old bearings and then pressing in the new ones. It is very doable, but would be a tremendous PITA. You will need either a larger arbor press and a buddy or at minimum a hydraulic H-style press and a series of adaptors.

You can buy new assemblies for around $250, a little less of you really dig. you will spend $75 or so on the aftermarket Timkens to out in the hub. So, you're really only going to save $150 or so and it is a MOFO job.

With so much riding on this (literally), I would tend to recommend that you replace the bad one with a "real" new on and then experiement on the one you pull out. Maybe rebuild it and see what it takes. If you are pleased, then run it on the other side when it goes out. It's a helluva thing to commit to if it doesn't come out quite right and you have your rig torn down.

Good luck. If you do it, take plenty of pics.
