Turn signals not working correctly? Easy, free fix.

I started having turn signal issues, wrong signal coming on, both signals coming on, no signals at all. For the last month, the turn signal has worked correctly a total of 0 times. I had stopped using it all together, figuring no turning information was better than the wrong information.

I searched here and found it was a common problem. It seemed the only option was replacing the Multi Function Switch. With futher research, found that someone had solved the problem by pulling the MFS and cleaning it.

Well, I did this this three days ago, and the problem has completely gone away.

Here's what I did:

1. Removed the torx screw that holds on the tilt steering handle.

2. Removed the tilt steering handle

3. Removed the three torx screws that hold the steering column cowling together.

4. Removed the steering column cowling, it snaps apart rather easily.

5. Removed both negative battery cables (probably should have done this first)

6. unplugged the wires going to the MFS

7. Removed the two most visible screws to the left of the steering wheel (HINT: Make sure your steering wheel is turned to where you can get to both of these screws before disconnecting the batteries. I had to reconnect to so I could do this.)

8. Pull the MFS to the left, it is in there tightly, but it will snap out.

9. Remove the three small (tiny really) torx screws on the MFS. I had to go to Autozone because I didn't have a torx wrench small enough. The let me use it for free.

10. Remove the cover of the MFS by gently prying open the plastic tabs.

11. Wipe all the gunk off of the circuit board

12. Reassemble the MFS, snap it back in, put the screws back in, plug the wire back in, replace the cowling, put the tilt handle back on, reconnect the battery, and enjoy working turn signals!

sometimes what happens is that the contact material can wear off into the lube that they are greased with from the factory. If that lube sags or gets spread elsewhere it can close contacts through the particles that aren't meant to be touched. Hosing all that crap out will solve the problem on the short term, but unless you relube the contacts and such you may find them wearing out sooner rather than later.

Good info. Any idea what I should re-lube them with?

Just FYI, there was a ton of dirt and gunk in the lube, which I think led to the problem. There was definite dirt trail from one contact to the other, which I think was making the false connections. Realizing what you just said, if I were to do it again, I would just clean between the contacts, leaving the lube on the parts where it's supposed to be.

a dielectric grease that can be found at any auto parts store should do great. They may call it bulb grease too because it is used mostly to lube up bulb sockets for the quarter turn type bulbs.

This was the post I found once, that led me to fix it this way. I'm a search idiot though, so I couldn't find it again to give you credit.

Thanks for saving me some $$$!

btw, almost two more weeks since the fix and it's still working great!

Great info! I just picked up my 06 last week and it started doing this, as well as the gear display not registering that the truck is in park (which will not allow it to start) and sometimes cause the horn to sound when I let off of the brake pedal. I'm assuming this is all of the same problem?

FYI, I received a notice this summer from Dodge that this part (Multi-Function Switch) was now covered under a special extension of the warranty by Dodge due to signaling the wrong way, etc like you described. Mine hasn't gone TU yet but it sounded like if it does you can take it to the dealer and have it replaced for free. I also have an 06.

Wow Im I glad I found this thread, my 05 has all of these problems. Signaling the wrong way, wipers not alwase working correctly. I was just going to get a new mfs, I found an aftermarket one for relitively cheep. But I also have the horn honking problem too, which i have not been able to pinpoint. I have noticed it normaly does it when I stop, place it in park and open the door. But thats all i can figure, it sure is anoying. Any ideas?

this works great! only thing was that I couldnt get the tilt handle to come off, I couldnt find the screw that held it on. I was able to get the MFS changed by moving the bottom cowl around.

I am having the same problem. I swear to god my tilt handle does not have a screw holding it together. . . I will try to maneuver around it.

Anyone know how to get the tilt handle off? A pic maybe?

I recently had problems with my turn signals as well. I replaced the MFS and haven't had any problems with the signals since. However, I'm having problems with my headlights still. My low beams will not come on at all. My high beams work fine just no low beams. Any ideas what's going on there?

depending what year your truck is they are fused under the hood in a different circuit, could be as simple as a bad fuse up there.

did your truck have a factory installed towing package or was it installed aftermarket? (you may have to look at build codes in the glove box and decode it)

I got the tilt handle off by pushing it down then pulling towards the steering wheel , On mine ( 05 ) they are no screws holding the tilt handle on .

I realize this is an older post that guys with the same problem discover. I have the same problem. Flashers and turn signals work when they want to. Sometimes if I hit the flasher the right turn signal works. For kicks I will pull the MFS switch and clean. I just do not understand what I'm suppose to re-lube.

Has anyone tried the extended warranty on the mfs quoted in this post?

I have noticed that the horn will honk if I put it in Park and open the door too quickly. I think my truck is a little slow minded and it takes a second to realize it is in park and it does not have to do the honk warning.
