I've always check the fan clutch by spinning the fan. When you spin the fan you should feel some resistance. If you spin the fan and the fan spins fairly easy then the clutch is bad. If you spin the fan it it stops almost as soon as you spin it then the clutch is ok...Kind of a shade tree tech advice but it hasn't let me down yet....

You'll know by sound if your fan clutch is working, that's a massive fan, it moves a lot of air. It will tend to cycle when the truck is warm, especially if you turn the AC on or off. It will also tend to sound like a hurricane under the hood when fully engaged and driving off slowly from a start. Mine does it every morning when the truck is cool, you can hear the fan just blowing hard as you start to take off, and then it sounds like the engine is revving higher but the fan cuts back.
The other advice is good too.

Just a heads-up....
if you isolated that ticking sound to the fan/clutch, keep an eye on it.
That was an indicator just before mine went. I was told it was the bearing
going bad.
