Is there a write up on the Heater core shut-off valve? I searched and didn't find anything. If not you should try and do one with pics! It would be greatly appreciated.
It's VERY simple and takes maybe 5-10 minutes. I bought a 5/8" manual heater hose valve and two hose clamps for 5/8" hose from Advance Auto parts.
1. Cut the heater hose that comes out of the head that goes into the firewall. I used a utility razor knife.
2. Slip the hose clamps over each of the two ends of the hose you just cut.
3. Insert the valve into both cut hose ends.
4. Tighten both hose clamps.
5. Start the truck and check for leaks.
I'll take a pic of it installed and post it up tomorrow evening after work.

The Following User Says Thank You to MegaCabEddy For This Useful Post:
how about a write up on how to get to the screens/take off the dash
It's not that hard to pull the dash. As a matter of fact, it's MUCH easier than the 03 Silverado that I had. A write up is going to be pretty involved and very long. I didn't take any pics of the process, but I'll start working on a general write up on what I can remember. When I finish it I'll update the first post of this thread with it.
The first post has been updated.

Once the valve is closed the heater core is isolated. It probably still has water/coolant in it but it's not getting and hot flow through it. I have read that others turn the valve on once or twice a month to let water run through. It doesn't have any ill effects on the cooling system of the engine to cut the core out of the loop.

As far as an electric valve, I saw one online a few
days ago. I don't remember where but it was around $100. Both of my Firebirds have vacuum operated valves and they're $15.
For the fan I was thinking about having it come on with the compressor but I'm leaning more towards wiring it into the ignition so that it comes on with the engine. But, I'm going to put a switch in the + line to turn the fan off if I want to. It will be on most of the year because I use the a/c almost all year round. Wiring it this way will be much easier and I won't have to mess with any relays.
