double din head unit in an 04?

Okay I went to a stereo shop today for pricing on a dvd screen head unit. Obviously I was looking for a folding unit because the 04 dash is rather small. Guy at the shop told me he made a custom piece to fit a big head unit (double din he called it). Which I thought was slick and a lot cleaner then the folded out screen sticking way up. Then he told me the custom dash piece he made cost $1200 and I laughed in face and practically walked out.

So I'm askin if anybody has seen somethin like this and how much.

Well that top link doen't show photo's anymore.

The bottom link worked but man that's a ton of work. I'm not too confident or experienced with stereo stuff. I was just wondering if there was something ready to install out there instead of some $1200 piece. Might have to do more research and see how hard it would be. Like you fordassassin, I don't have the money to do this so I got time to figure it out.

I did it all myself, it's not bad. I have had a avic D3 in my truck for about 3 months now. The bezel is pretty much done just been lazy. You have to do some minor cutting to the inside of your dash, very easy to do. You have to custom make the mounting brackets, again very easy. The bezel is quite a bit of work and time to get it to look 100% perfect. There is one on ebay, but it is around $200 by the time you add shipping and the few people who have got it say it doesn't fit very well.

I know some people have found shops to do the install start to finish, no way it costed $1100. But I would bet $500 or so to take it from the way it is now to a installed double din, maybe even a bit more.

By the time I cut the dash, made the mounting brackets and wired in the unit I had about 4 hours into it. Probably going to have about 6-7 hours into the bezel. But I started with a SLT bezel with the rough texture and I am making it the laramie bezel painted silver and smooth. Hours and hours hand sanding.....

I paid $350.00 a piece for mine from a local stereo shop. This was labor to modify my current dashes.
