Is it worth buying a 3rd gen?

Well yesterday I sold my 94 2500 4x4, it was a great truck but the rust really got it. It had 524,000km on it and worked great. I need to replace it with something right away but I have been doing some reading on the forum and it sounds like the common rail trucks can have alot more problems than the old trucks. I would really like a bigger cab so the 03 and up is kind of my only option. I have a chance to buy my friends 05 with a 6-speed, 290,000km new hubs, clutch and the trans was just gone through. I just dont want to buy it and have some major fuel or engine issues. Is 05 a good year to get? Maybe I should just keep my eyes open for a good 01 or 02? Thanks for the help and suggestions, this is a great site!

The 3rd gens are great trucks, I would much rather have one then the 2nd gen 24valve, for the comfort alone. Most people that are having injector problems are running pressure boxes, and with these trucks filtration is the key to keeping injectors alive. Get a good filtration system like and airdog or a Fass and you will be good to go.

Id rather have a third gen myself. They are nice trucks. One downfall to an 05 is they have plastic endtanks on the intercooler, but thats easily fixed through a aftermarket Ic or an Oem from a diff year.

Ok thanks guys, where is the inline pump on an 03? I also might be going to look at it but I was just wondering how I can quickly tell if it has been replaced with an in tank one under warranty.

Im not sure what you mean by your question. If it has the stock lift pump it will be in the tank. No real good way to tell if its been replaced. You can either drop the tank or take off the bed and look.

If you are talking about the Cp3 injection pump that will be in the engine bay on the driverside. If thats been changed you could always ask for a receipt. You can ask for a receipt on either one I guess.

bump the starter and dont start the truck but leave the key on, the lift pump will run for 30secs, you can hear where it is coming from. The 03s had the pump in the engine but alot got the intank one put in later.
