I believe you only need the wire if your truck is a manual. Either way, you still need to go to a dealership and have the program enabled in the trucks computer. It only takes a few minutes, and was free to me....

Maybe a stupid question but the high idle you are talking about....if I start my truck when its cold it will run approx. 45secs to a minute and and go to a high idle itself.(goes off when you hit a pedal or take the ebrake off) When its totally warmed up and you park it with the ebrake on it will idle high then sometimes(if its really cold). Is the only benefit from the wire deal to be able to manually turn on the high idle?

To answer some questions.....
1) Installing that grounding wire from port #22 on the ecm is needed only on manual trucks. If you have an automatic this is not needed because when you put the tranny in Park it does the same thing the wire does for the manual trucks
2) the "high idle" feature that you get to use through the cruise control needs to be enabled in the PCM. This is in addition to the "wire" step that the manual trucks need. If you have an automatic or manual tranny you need the feature enabled by a dealer or someone with a Star Scan tool.
3) The high idle feature is actually for the PTO. Yoiu have control over this through the use of your cruise control buttons. The RPM's have a range of 1000-1500
4) The high idle (PTO) is NOT the same as the high idle that the engine engages when the outside temperatures drop to a low enough level. You have no contol over the ihigh idle RPM's that occur from lower outside temperatures
5) You can use the PTO high idle at ANY time
